Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Series

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

^Well, you said "the episode," not "an episode," so it sounded like you were talking about the episode they're currently filming.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

I hope one day, all three of the characters die a horrible and painful death.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

^ And die peacefully of old age? The horror....

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

Strax has died at least twice and Jenny once, but it would be nice retire them for a bit. Moffat has turned the Sontarans into a joke and did pretty much the same thing for the Daleks and Cybermen too.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

I'd still take the Paternoster Gang over seeing the Weeping Angels again.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

I like Strax, Jenny and Vastra. They provide comic relief. It might be worth taking a break from them for a while, but I hope to see them again, maybe on a more rare occasion.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

It will be interesting to see how the Paternosta gang interact with Capaldi, it might not work as well, it might work better. If Capaldi is going to be darker and more serious then Strax and co might have a vital role in lightening the tone on occasion.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

How many times have we seen them? And how many times were they used in a story which focused on them? I wouldn't mind seeing them again, I think their potential hasn't been fully explored yet.

And "turning the Sontarans into a joke"? Were we supposed to take them seriously before?

My thoughts exactly. Sontarans are the one Alien/Monster in Doctor Who that I've never been able to take seriously.

Well Linx was pretty dangerous, but they've been variable since then. As for their current status, well RTD didn't exactly treat them with oodles of respect when he brought them back. I still think there's potential, Strax bereft of his memories in The Name of the Doctor was quite menacing.

Oh sure, they have been menacing sometimes, but, it's hard to take them seriously when they look like they should be smothered in Butter and Sour Cream ;)

The Dalek Plungers and Egg Whisks have never been so distracting for me, though, for some reason

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

The Sontarans were always something of a satire of pompous militarism and the glorification of war. They were a Robert Holmes creation, after all, and he loved satirizing various types of authority figures and institutions. They're not just absurd because of how they look, they're absurd because of their twisted belief that war is not only good, but the entire purpose of existence. Doctor Who villains tend to represent harmful philosophies taken to their absolute extremes. Daleks have stripped away everything but hate, envy, and brutality. Cybermen have stripped away everything but cold, ruthless logic. But at least they pursue war as a means toward those clearly defined ends. The Sontarans, by contrast, have fetishized war as an end in itself, stripped away everything about their species and culture except the process and mechanics of waging war, without having any reason to do so. (Sure, they're at war with the Rutans, but that's just their excuse. They were already a conqueror race when the Rutan-Sontaran War began; the Rutans' opposition just gave them an incentive to engineer themselves into even more "perfect" warriors.) So their whole way of life, their whole biology and psychology, is built around a purpose that has no purpose. And that's profoundly ludicrous and pathetic.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

What they could do for the end of the episode would be to have Capaldi's Doctor tell the Paternosta gang that they are like fairytale characters who helped him through his childlike forgetful Doctor phase (sort of like the supporting muppets in Jim Henson's Labyrinth) and now it's time to grow up again. I would like that.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

Paternoster. As in the row.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

Moffat is already hesitant over using River Song again and if he's doing that, my sense is that the Paternost gang is just used to transition fans from Smith over to Capaldi. Very likely, this first episode will be the very last time we see Vastra, Jenny and Strax.

I'd be more than willing to bet that that has more do with Alex Kingston's (lack of) availability than anything else - she's in Arrow now, and is about to start a run of Macbeth in New York with Ken Branagh.

If Lem (the Papal Mainframe woman) in Time Of The Doctor wasn't originally, in some draft, written as a post-Library River which got changed cos Kingston wasn't available, I'll eat *all* of my hats.

Re: Steven Moffat Talks About The "Raw", "New Direction" For The Serie

I like the Paternoster Gang and I'm glad we'll be seeing them in the new series. I still would like to see a spin-off show with them.
