Is the bridge "live" and monitored through the ship?

I was thinking the bridge must have a live feed that all persons can view. If Picard calls to the transporter room "beam that man up now!", Obrien never has to say "what guy? Oops too late."

There are various examples in all the series where sickbay, the shuttle bay, security, auxiliary control, life support etc have all been contacted in the midst of some event by the bridge and other stations don't seem to need any briefing on what the Captain is talking about.

Can anybody contrast that with working on the larger real word Navy ships? Does a crewmember repairing jets on the lower decks of a carrier know whats going on upstairs? Can a 21st century Captain contact any department on the ship during a crisis and expect a response like Picard gets?

A very good question. I've always wondered when the ship comes under attack, power fails, or Redjac starts shouting through the intercoms, does the rest of the crew have a clue as to what's gong on?

That's an interesting question. I don't think that they could have a "live feed" of the bridge throughout the ship, because a whole bunch of things happen up there that would cause some major panic. But maybe places like sickbay and the transporter rooms have feeds.

The bridge is monitored by the EMH program whenever it's activated according to Voyager, (The Cloud), along with other critical systems.

So I imagine that there's a process in place to monitor everything else, since there's a precedent.

There could be an unseen Twitter-esque system on board where, as data is inputed by the operations manager on the bridge (Data on TNG, but possibly Uhura in TOS?), so it is shown on various crucial consoles throughout the ship in places like the transporter room or sickbay. So when an order comes through the crew in those areas are fully up to speed with the situation and are ready to respond instantly. TNG's graphic displays were not sophisticated enough to show this kind of background detail, but in practical terms we might see parts of consoles were there's a continual updating of text with mission relevant information constantly being updated 'as it happens'.

It's a good question. I think the reality is, most people below decks would have no idea what's going on. They would have weeks of boredom doing routine jobs, punctuated by occasional minutes of terror as the ship is suddenly rocked by enemy fire, plunging toward the Denavan sun, or being pressured by the hand of Apollo.

I have to guess that any relevant data would be located on OSDs found in the corridors. Afterall, they do change when displaying red alert, so it only makes sense if they could change to display other things as well. A bulletin board of sorts. This of course would be restricted to data that isn't top-level as to not panic anyone.

For one thing I get the sense that people in the Utopia aren't obsessed with getting a constant stream of information throughout each day, despite the technology available. That said, tons of crew members are stationed at consoles I think. So people in each department or section or whatever must be monitoring the general status of the ship. I doubt they know the nuances of the story though. They don't need to know.

Probably not- we have heard them before talking about uncertainty, doubts or mistrust- things which it would not be too good for the crew at large to know about. Senior staff might be able to access them, but the moral would be all over the place if they actually knew what the captain was thinking all the time.

I think different departments are kept alert about events unfolding which would involve them- the chief engineer at the bridge station could inform the engineering staff if certain things might be needed or shut down. People are pressing buttons all the time on the bridge and a lot of them could be coordinating responsible departments.

I was watching "Shades Of Gray" last night (don't ask), and it occured to me that O'Brien does seemingly do something like this. We're introduced to the situation in terms of Geordi finding Riker on the planet. He then contacts O'Brien on the Enterprise, who (despite not actually 'speaking' directly to her over the comm) talks with Geordi a bit then informs them that Pulaski is on her way. My assumption is that O'Brien quickly typed something into his twitter-feed like "RYKER DAMANGED ON PLANETSURFACE ROFL", to which Pulaski got an update on her sickbay computer, sighed, and 'tweeted' she was on her way down.

Of course, in 1980s terms O'Brien effectively "pages" Pulaski rather than it being implied to be anything else, but hey, it's *my* interpretation.
