2010:The Year We Make Contact(1984) spacesuits

Besides the obvious thoughts that the second novel should not have been filmed at all. Or that no sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001:A Space Odyssey(1968) was needed. Peter Hyams attempt with original cast members Keir Dullea and Douglas Rain plus the recast Heywood Floyd(Roy Scheider) was interesting. The replication of original sets and miniatures were good considering the originals were eliminated by Kubrick. I liked 2010:The Year We Make Contact(1984) too.

In the 2010:The Year We Make Contact(1984) it is stated that the Discovery II is under construction and not ready for the mission back to Jupiter. As production design goes, I think that the Americans on board the Leonov should have worn the same design colored spacesuits as were used in the original 2001 film instead of the bulking old-fashioned spacesuits that look like Apollo era leftovers. The 2001 colored spacesuits were seen in 2010 on Keir Dullea and hanging in the Discovery I podbay, but not on the American astronauts. The American's wearing retro spacesuits looked wrong.

I do think that was a curious choice. But, I think they made it because the suits people wore were "modern" for the audience, because they did look the suits Shuttle astronauts wore, and the old 2001 suits looked like retro suits. (Because, well, they were.)

Overall, I wasn't too distracted. The movie tonally and stylistically different--and made decades later, that it doesn't take away my pleasure of the movie. That's right, I enjoyed it.

Now, you know what book should never be filmed in this series? 3001. Ugh.

Well one possible theory is the American suits were more advanced that the Russian suits, and the Americans didn't want the Russians examining them too much. So the American's used Russian suits in 2010

As far as the spacesuits go, if we look at the thinner retro ones worn during the first spacewalk, it seems that real-life spacesuits have gotten bulkier (or simply more protective) just likes the ones in the sequel were.

They are completely different animals. I enjoyed them both and they are both good in very different ways. (So don't sweat it.)

Really? I assume you're being sarcastic, since 2001 had Tony Masters, ably aided by Harry Lange, whereas 2010 couldn't even mockup the Discovery cockpit without making the part with the monitors look like it was built from foamcore.

Even though I watch 2010 every year or two, it is always with a 'geez, why didn't they do THIS instead?' mindset. They could have paid homage to 2001 by stylistically referencing it ... play the blue danube while seeing US and Soviet ambassadors scuffling on the floor of the UN, perhaps. In fact, keeping a larger portion earthbound and just throwing the godawful bad novel away would not have been a bad idea, maybe more of an Earth/Space ratio in the DEEP IMPACT vein, where you're in the nuclear buildup crisis most of the time and only on the space mission part as the B-plot.

And geezus, the smoke levels on that ship!

I will say that Balaban is wonderful, though. And the miniature work is seriously outstanding.

Good point , I wonder if there was a line or two edited out stating the protection of the spacesuit technology was the reason.

For me, it would have been visually impressive if they had used the original 2001 spacesuits for all Americans just because I liked the design.

It is nice to see that Hyams's 2010 is chosen over Kubrick's 2001.

Tom Hanks wanted to make a 3001 film (he'd also play Frank Poole) but there's no news on that one for awhile now.
