James Bond franchise--the return of SPECTRE and Blofeld?

Batman has the Joker, Reed Richards has Dr. Doom, Sherlock Holmes has Prof. Moriarity, but for legal reasons it has been decades since James Bond has faced his arch-foes, Ernst Stavo Blofeld and SPECTRE. (Blofeld was last seen in the main movie series in "For Your Eyes Only", and last mentioned by name even further back, in "Diamonds Are Forever". Of course, he was the villain in "Never Say Never Again", but that goes back to the legal issues involving the character).

But it seems that the legal issues have been resolved, and MGM has secured the rights.

So, who wants to see Daniel Craig go up against Blofeld and his white cat?
 
Nah. The Craig movies already have Quantum, which is still dangling. No need for another international conspiracy. When they recast Bond, maybe, but I was never especially fond of SPECTRE, since the acronym is pretty silly (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion).
 
I was reading an article recently about Drones and vulnerability to being hacked (either spoofing the GPS or blocking the signal from the ground). It struck me as a great modernization of the traditional SPECTRE plot to capture rival spaceships in You Only Live Twice.

Actually, that was already more or less used in Never Say Never Again, when the cruise missiles are jammed and downed near Largo's yacht, way back in 1983...

Sure, it's been used several times - each with SPECTRE. American Drones being hacked and used to ferment war would still be a neat story idea.

Really? It bores the hell outta me. Yet another stolen-weapons plot... as if all four of the Brosnan movies, plus the hacking angle of Skyfall, weren't enough? It sounds more like a decent Agents of Shield episode. :p

Yeah, funny thing about that Moriarty, he appears in all of two of Doyle's actual stories and is only mentioned in a handful of others; in the grand scheme of things, he's not really all that, mostly just a quick and lazy way for Doyle to kill off Holmes without it seeming too random or unjustified.

This would be the other problem with bringing back Blofeld — you'd need to have a top-notch script and an Oscar-caliber actor to make Blofeld remotely menacing.

Many didn't believe that a rugged type like Craig would make a good Bond and we got some of the best Bond movies ever (subjective opinion of course).

It's the charisma of the actor and the script that would make a good Blofeld. Now obviously a bald, cat stroking guy can't work today, especially not in Craig Bond movies so they will have to go with a different approach.

I've always believed that to have a good hero/villain movie you need to start with the villain and get the impression that he could actually defeat the hero or you will just get a mindless action movie (which sometimes is also ok) but if you have higher aspirations you can't neglect the villain.

This is why Ledger's Joker is so widely regarded as one of the best villains ever.. much of it is due to Ledger's brilliant portrayal but also the character itself and his place in the story was also well done.

If the Bond franchise resurrects Blofed and Spectre they want to take a few clues from that.

Blofeld's cat is actually an invention of the movies and was never a part of the books, so it's hardly a must to include it.

On the other hand, the movies have made the cat such a signature part of the character that it almost seems wrong to discard it.
 
I agree that if Blofeld is brought back, it should be done by havin' him callin' the shots for Quantum instead of revivin' SPECTRE.

And considerin' the cast & box office success of Skyfall, I don't think they'd have much trouble gettin' a quality actor for the role.

I vote Patrick Stewart, since he's already bald.

That would actually be awesome.. i don't believe i saw Stewart as a villain in anything before and he's an awesome actor so no doubt he could pull it off given a good script :techman:
