An interesting idea would be to take the spinoff back a generation, by making the mother be Ted's mother and how she met his father.

I'm all for this, so long as it doesn't ruin what was special about HIMYM.

Well the stupid idea is the show.

It's like going into the Enterprise or Voyager show and just making up episodes because the real shows sucked / were too stupid to talk about.

Won't work. Ted's parents already told their story of how they met, in about one sentence. Their complete lack of romantic interest in their own meeting is what inspired Ted to tell his long story to his own kids of how he met their mother.

I'm actually interested in that if they get a good cast and change the formula a little bit, maybe make the father a cast member from the start and let him have his own storylines that intersect with the mother's at some points with them just not meeting.
Like in HIMYM we know the mother was at the party or in the class and the roommate and we saw her under an umbrella and her feet etc., instead this time drop that shit and actually show the future spouse in those and unrelated situations.

Just like the original show suprised the audience by revealing Robin was not the mother at the end of the pilot the spin-off could have them bump into each other on the very first scene but for some reason just ignoring and forgetting about each other until they meet again later.

I would hate to spend eight seasons on a show with two separate casts of characters that never, ever, ever meet until the end (or meet without knowing it).

What would be great is if they brought characters from the cast of HIMYM in as the wacky guest stars for various arcs (and show their worst sides) to kind of give us updates on what they got up to after the show ended. It is basically the only reason to make this a spin-off and not a new show entirely. It certainly doesn't sound like this will be the story of The Mother, but rather a different woman and her group of friends that will take place in 'modern day' much like the show has for most of its run.

Pretty much nailed it. Who wants to see the same show where they just switch the gender of the main lead?

I doubt they'd get someone as good as Neil Patrick Harris or can write an equally funny ensemble again (at least in the first seasons).

They are just making a copy of the same show and probably won't even have the original cast drop in from time to time (maybe for sweeps episodes once in a while)?

This has bad idea written all over it and the original show should have ended at least 2 seasons before but i guess the ratings were still strong and the studio/network pushed for a continuation (and it got so bad that even some actors from the show all but said out openly they're fed up and want to leave).

I might have gotten behind the idea of they took the Mother whom we now now and told the same sequence of events from her perspective (maybe as a running gag have the now adult kids sit on the couch) and have original cast members just walk by in the picture or sit at McLarens in the background.

I might see that for a time if the writing is good but somehow i doubt the showrunners have it in them anymore.. they overstretched a good idea and now it's just about money.

I've never heard of her before... she looks like Gillian Anderson. Wow, she's younger than I am!

The title doesn't quite have the same ring to it. I'd have thought they'd use 'Father' instead of Dad.

Dad is bad. Even daddy is better than dad.

    How about Pops or Spermclown?
