Wesley Crusher appreciation thread

I believe the correct response was Wesley is the Anakin Skywalker of Trek. He actually wasn't that bad once he grew out of the annoying brat stage. Which was around season 4... when he left. He was actually pretty good in the guest episodes he was in later on.

My major criticism with Wesley is he always sounded like the writers didn't know how to write for a teenager. They didn't wise up until his guest star shots.

I see why people hate Wesley but I didn't really. But maybe it's because I saw all the earlier episodes after the later ones.

It's a little funny how unconcerned he is about how often his experiments nearly kill everyone. I kind of think trapping your own mom in a warp bubble would have long term effects.

I was quite neutral towards the character. But.... 1) He was a top genius, 2) son of one of the senior officers, 3) too close to the captain, 4) first (or one of the first) humans to free themselves from time. If we can accept that last one, the combination of it all makes the whole situation too coincidental to be believable.

I thought Wesley was fine once they put him on the bridge and started treating him like a very junior officer. Wil and the writers managed to make him a likeable character after they dumped the Season 1 "boy genius at large" angle.

Well Wesley was Roddenberry's Mary Sue version of himself.

Pretty much. I knew this from the beginning.

I never blamed the actor for it, and on a general level Wesley was not that annoying really.

Any Wesley haters care to comment why they hate him so much?

Calling it an appreciation thread and then inviting a mass influx of haters seems at cross purposes.

Well I'm not a hater, and there's already other people making fun of him again, so the "haters" were already here before I "invited" them.

I think Wesley's genius status works well within the TNG universe. I always got the feeling that his hard work and his achievements were all due to his need to be accepted by people he admired, like Captain Picard, Riker, and even his mom.

It's also clear that in the end that's not what he wanted. How many kids get pushed into stuff they don't want by their parents, but end up excelling at the task simply because they want their folks to be proud of them?

I wasn't that thrilled with the evolutionary sendoff they gave Wesley in "Journey's End". It's like they waited until Roddenberry was dead to effectively remove Wesley permanently from Starfleet. It makes me wonder if Gene ever had that idea for a character based on himself. I still think the biggest problem with the character is the writers simply didn't know to how to write him.

The Traveler is creepy, the evolving is Roddenberry wank..

What I don't get is why Roddenberry had to Mary Sue himself in as essentially a child.

Anyway, gave Bev some personality at least, having a son on board. And all that speculation as to whether his dad could really be Picard was fun. And the sweaters, well they are awesome though Jake Sisko bested him on the future fashions from hell front.

Really, he's fine. If Riker had died and they had replaced him with Wesley I probably would have loved him. If Wesley had killed Riker I would have worshipped him! It would be WESLEY snuggling up in a happy same sex First Family in my avatar!!
