Joe Cornish To Direct STAR TREK 3?

I haven't seen ATB, so I can't really pass comment, but Trek 3 would only be his second movie.

The reports tipping Jon "the man who saved G.I. Joe" Chu are more credible to me. For the international action market Paramount is aiming at, Attack the Block might as well be a Fellini film.

I don't really have a problem with whoever they end up choosing. Abrams will be there as a producer, as will Orci and Kurtzman.

The look should be similar to the last two outings and most of the important pieces (characters, ships and sets) will already be in place.

Attack the Block was enjoyable enough, I guess. G.I. Joe 2 was utter shite. I'm still hoping for the guy who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was excellent.

If they go with Cornish, they need to call the next movie Attack the Balok!

Seems as though Cornish was already offered the job once previously:

No formal offer has been made and Cornish could pass on the project a second time. He last turned down the sci-fi tentpole in May.

My first choice would be Brad Bird, because of his work on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL. Like Nimoy before, he'd be able to work the ensemble.

It isn't, I'm only referring to his work as a film director. Given how well ATTACK THE BLOCK seems to have turned out (going by its reception), I think that shows he's just as capable. He doesn't have the experience Abrams had as a longtime Hollywood executive and writer, but a lot of good directors started off not having any of that and have turned in impressive works anyway.

I know nothing about him, but it wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened. The director of Jurassic World I believe had only done a low-budget movie when he was hired, and the Tron: Legacy director hadn't even made a feature film.

A very curious choice if true. I would have expected someone who has done a big budget movie with decent boxoffice results. I haven't seen the one movie that he directed, but having writing experience is a plus. But who knows, maybe he is the next great thing. If he has already turned the job down once means he has many offers and can afford to do that.

I think it likely the next film will have a moderately scaled back budget - $150m ish. Just speculation, but perhaps hiring a lower profile director is a cost saving exercise, allowing as much resource on screen as possible.

All due respect to Cornish, love his work and look forward to what he does in future but I think at this time it's too big a film for him to jump to from something like 'Attack of the Block'. Star Trek is a big budget action film, it's still a franchise that's trying to get back on it's feet and I think it needs a Director with a bit more experience directing something this large. Didn't even Abrams say that Directing MI3 helped prepare him for making Star Trek?

I would think that being a monumental 50th Anniversary film, that the pressure is going to be enormous. I'm not convinced he'll be able to handle the task.

Is no one here familiar with Joe Cornish as one half of Adam and Joe from the Adam and Joe show? Sure it was a mid 90s late teens-early 20s stoner piece of crap, but they referenced Star Trek a lot - especially TNG. Hell, they did a take over TV night on the BBC all about TNG and made this choice song:

If Joe Cornish, now with a low budget but visually impressive film under his belt has a chance to create a Star Trek movie - a franchise he obviously has as much respect for as you or me - I'm all for it.
