Not too bad. The screechy violin music taking to commercial a few times is getting old... Wouldn't mind seeing a period piece set in George Washington's time on the show. The demons writing in sheets scene was cheesy and not at all convincing, looks like corners were cut on the effects there. Uneven direction. Still enjoyable though, and effectively creating a mythos.
Decent episode. As a German I have to point out the German speech parts were unconvincing. Thick American accents on phonetically learned text. I actually needed the subtitles to understand it all.
When the bad guy said to Crane "You're German is exceptional." that was unintentionally hilarious. Only Crane's German was at least comprehensible compared to the supposed Hessians, which actually made it true in-universe.
But to the average, non-German/German speaking viewer, it came across well. REALLY liked this episode... So much better than the Sandman from last week... I felt this really moved things along.
Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I have forgotten a great deal of the German I learned in college. I was sitting there thinking what did they say? The guy playing Crane keeps me coming back. He plays the role with the right amount of aplomb, smugness and bewilderment, and I like the sisters Mills.
^^^ Agreed - he's definitely well cast and one of the best aspects of the show. I really like the two sisters as well and I'm glad that Clancy Brown is still playing a side-role, contingent to the plot. I must admit, though, I'm kind of stuck in Grimm-land and keep expecting the police chief to be shown to know more about what's going on in the town than he is revealing. And what WAS the deal with the priest from the pilot, anyway? He has barely been mentioned since, yet he was proven to have been around as long as Crane, even longer considering his apparent advanced age. He was cut down by the Hessian and that was it! No real backstory or any other explanation why there are a number of immortals bouncing about this quiet little New York hamlet. I'm just curious, however, when they're going to put Crane in something other than an 18th century greatcoat. That thing must be getting a bit ripe, having been on him for the past 200-some-odd years...
I loved Abbie giving her sister a five-second recap of Ichabod's 18th-century origins, all very matter-of-fact.
I also thought more would be made of the priest. They made a point of showing him at the diner and showing him back in time. Then he just gets whacked by the horsemen. See ya! Were we to infer that he was some type of sentinel? But, Crane's body was out in the boonies. Is he one of the witches from Katrina's coven? Why give him lingering shots if nothing more it to be made of it? I would totally love it if Mills Febrezed Crane.
Yes, the opening scene with the "Northstar" punchline was hilarious. And both the Mills sisters are really hot, though Nicole Beharie is the better actress. Did anyone else notice a spark of attraction between Crane and Jenny? Oh, I bet Abbie would hate that. Kurtzman & Orci appear to be fond of the photographic-memory trope. IIRC, Olivia on Fringe had the same ability.
I actually totally forgot about the priest until you posted. Hopefully they'll get to that eventually and haven't decided to ignore it. I've been having the same thought. I would think they would have to get him some new clothes eventually. They did show him washing his clothes in the hotel/motel sink in the second episode, so at least we know he's cleaning it at least some. You'd still think he'd want some new clothes eventually though.
^The trailer for next week's episode showed Crane questioning Abbie whether his hair fit in to current day. I would guess that the episode will explore a little more of the fish out of water aspect of the show than we've seen yet.
Being away, I just got caught up on the last two episodes. I really like this show, a lot. It's just got enough of everything to make it intriguing. Someone earlier mentioned casting, without a doubt this is making the show work. Tom Mison just works as Ichabod, he just exudes the character. While I think she is the weaker link, Nicole Beharie Abbie does have good chemistry with Ichabod. While I don't think I would call this the best show on television, it's one of the most enjoyable. Do random New York Native Americans keep dream weaving tea and scorpions around just incase they have to fight deamons from Dante's inferno on a moments notice?
