Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

I'm sure someone out there has a well thought out argument as how a free-market approach would work, under what if any regulatroy conditions it would operate, in what ways would it be better than the PPACA.

But it seems as if the political divide in the USA has widened a little esp. over the last few years. But that's just an outsiders viewer, of course the political divide widening is not unique to the USA it can occur in other countries.

But last I checked how democracy works is that a bill is presented before <insert name of elected body> and the elected members vote on whether or not to pass it or reject it. From my understanding it a clean budget or continuing resolution has enough votes from both Democrats and Republicans to pass. Now the members of the Tea Party wing of the Republican party will say they are representing the views of those that elected which is fine, they can vote against the bill.

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

No one wants the 19th century again except those who can afford it.

In short: well-to-do and downright rich conservatives and libertarians.

When a person understands that, they understand what motivates much of modern libertarianism and the hard Right in general.

That argument is like saying folks that are against Cap&trade want dirty air and water.

That's OK, "47%" as portrayed is right.

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

This is ll bullshit. A good friend of mine has a pre-existing condition and lives under the poverty level. He spoke with someone at healthcare.gov. He was told that as a person living under the poverty level and receiving medicare that he was not permitted by the ACA to purchase Gap or Dental insurance in the marketplace. He hads to purchase dnetal from outside obama care the old fashioned and expensive way. He'd only qualify if he purchased all of his insurance from ACA which he cannot afford.,

Someone with a pre-existing condition living below the poverty line can't get unrelated dental insurance even though ACA was never about dental insurance? THANKS OBAMA!

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

I don't have a stake in this, and I only very marginally care, but I can't decide whether it's hilarious or sad that you Americans are still fighting over whether or not health insurance is a good idea. Why do you even have elections?

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

We have elections to elect people who act for us by voting or exercising the power of the Presidency, depending on what we're talking about. The House of Representatives had every representative stand for election and more Republicans won. They undoubtedly campaigned on limiting or repealing the ACA. At the same time, there was also a Presidential election and elections for about 1/3 of the Senators. In both those elections, those who campaigned for keeping the ACA won more often than not.

I think the election showed the way Americans lean on the issue, but I don't think it settled it conclusively.

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

Of course the next even bigger crisis looming in the USA is the debt ceiling. Doesn't that occur on the 17th Octber (assumin it isn't resolved)?

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

Can't we just reboot the country?

Of course it's a little more complex than that. Sure if you look at in terms of seats the Rebuplicans won more, but a quick look at the wikipedia page regarding the 2012 House of Rreprestive election

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections,_2012

Shows that in terms of numbers 60.3m voted Democrat whilst only 58.4m voted Repulican, in terms of vote swing the Democrats had a +3.4% whilst the Republicans had a -4.8%.

So the Democrats had more votes, whilst not gaining a majority they had a positive swing whilst the Republicans had a loss. So one could make an argument is that the public in general was more favourable to what the Democratic Partyy was offering.

It was the same for the US Senate election in 2012.

The Democratic Party has a positive swing whilst the republicans had a negative swing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_elections,_2012

But the issue is not so much about number of seats as from all reports there is enough support from Republicans to pass the Budget Bill (or continuing resolution) just that the speaker won't present it to the house.

I want to complain about Cash for Clunkers not covering that sweet new Dolby Digital sound system I wanted. This is what happens when you elect fistbumping Kenyan Muslims.

I was gonna get jiggy with it.

No one is saying that health insurance is a bad idea. It's been around for decades.

Mandatory health insurance is another thing.

Government run health insurance is another thing.

Going more in debt because of the ACA is another thing.

Passing a bill with no bi-partisan support and expecting the other party not to fight it is STUPID.

Refusing to compromise is stupid, see Harry Reid and President Obama.

I agree completely there, but I don't think that's the same as saying it's settled. It wasn't decisive enough to prevent the Republicans from having a voice in government.

Setting aside your other comments, I want to focus on your last one: Compromise.

"Compromise" must have a new meaning where you come from. What I'm seeing is less "compromise" and more "temper tantrum" on the part of the GOP. Sorry, kid, what you're seeing isn't an issue of compromise, because the plan the GOP are against is the plan they backed just a scant decade ago, except at that time it was a plan created by the Heritage Foundation, later enacted by former Governor Mitt Romney as "Romneycare."

See, the ACA could cost nothing, give everyone everything, and take no resources, and the GOP would be against it, because it came about under Obama's presidency, and since everything he does is evil, unpatriotic, and wrong, it has to be opposed.

There is no compromise when your opposing faction just wants your face in the dirt.

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

The Tea Party's idea of compromise is more or less the following:

1.) I act like a six-year-old, you don't want to hear it so you cave, I get what I want and call you an un-American socialist afterwards.
2.) The End.

I might be adding more nuance than exists in the actual process, mind you, but you get the general idea.

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

So in what areas are the Republicans willing to compromise? They want to delay the PPACA for a year or certain provisions of it. In return for the Democrats agreeing to that are they offering anything in return?

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

The Republican and conservative method of negotiation often reminds me of the following movie line:

"I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last."

That's just liberal blather.

The ACA is another level of government (federal) control that's not desire nor needed.

The only compromise that's come out of congress is from the house. The Senate and POTUS won't even talk.
