Tom Clancy RIP

When I first heard the news, I thought of the guy who voiced Lex Luthor in DC animated shows, among other things. Then I thought, Tom Clancy, not Clancy Brown. May he rest in peace.

I've enjoyed reading many of his books and played almost all of his games.

RIP TC.

I greatly enjoyed his classic, solo-authored Ryanverse novels. Back in the day, he had a way of selling his conservative views in a way that I found agreeable.

I only recently picked up the paperback of Dead or Alive and haven't delved into it yet. What's the story behind the co-authorship of these more recent Ryan books? Are the co-authors the real primary authors, or are they true Clancy books and he just needed help because of his health?

Clancy got a taste of James Patterson's "co-authoring" arrangements when he lent his name to the Op-Center series (the first book has TOM CLANCY emblazoned upon the cover, but writer Jeff Rovin's name is nowhere to be seen). Starting with Dead or Alive, Grant Blackwood and later Mark Greaney were the principal authors, while Clancy raked in the paychecks.

Big fan of his early work. Got bored with his later stuff. He was nothing less than a legend.

RIP Tom.

As others have said, his 80s/90s stuff is as good as.. ah, politico-techno-military-spy thrillers get. He coul write an infodump as a thrilling scene.
Later... whether he was ill or bored or was just letting someone else write them, the infodumps became infodumps. But he was at the top for 20 years.

I liked the early ones, but they seemed to veer off course for me after a while.

For fans, he has one more coming out in December, called iirc, 'Command Authority'. No idea who's in it.

It was either his Divorce or the end of the one-on-one antagonism of the cold war that damaged his later work.
He just wasn't as good at forging the POVs of several factions into a great page turner, the way he could with the back and forth of the NATO/Soviet rivalry. His style was as as close to perfect as you can get for that.

Listing to all the recent commentary on the tv and radio about Tom Clancy's death has made me want to check out his Jack Ryan stories. What is the recommended reading order? Apparently the publication order isn't the chronological order

Llama, I reccomend reading them in the order they were published more or less. Red Storm Rising is the only one of the early works that are not part of the Jack Ryan canon (It's about a fictional NATO/Soviet war with a Jack Ryan clone. It's a pretty good read though).

I think the novels jumped the shark when Ryan became President. Though I don't know what happened after Rainbow Six. I just hope he didn't introduce some sort of Jack Ryan Jr. who does the action why old fart Ryan makes the decisions.

RIP
Thanks for the years of entertaining. Red October, Red Storm Rising and Without Remorse are great classics!

No, but reading it in the publishing order is fine. The stories aren't that interconnected.

Still, if you wanna go by timeline:

Red Rabbit
Patriot Games
The Hunt for Red October
The Cardinal of The Kremlin
Clear and Present Danger
The Sum Of All Fears
Debt of Honor
Executive Orders
The Bear And The Dragon
Dead or Alive
Threat Vector

These are all the books where Ryan is either the main or a prominent character.

Do you spoil yourself reading in chronological order? You know like watching the Star Wars prequels first, spoils the who is Vader reveal
