Well, he kept fiddling with the timeline. If you look at his description of Poole's life, it's clear that the events of 2001 couldn't have taken place in 2001 and so forth. And then there was the retconning, such as with the Stargate. I think the term he used was "variations on a theme." I didn't like that aspect, either.
But he was very old when he wrote it. He could still come up with the ideas, but didn't seem to have the focus or energy to develop them.
My favorite aspect was bringing back Poole, giving the series a feeling of circularity. But I really wished that he would have brought back Clindar and Eos from Lost Worlds of 2001 and given us a real epic finale. Instead it turned into a confrontation and was put off for another 900 years.
Now that's interesting and topical. Can you give us an idea of what he has to say?Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, Jonathan Haidt. Excellent so far..
Also, defeating the aliens using a Trojan Horse computer virus was far too mundane a climax for story that started out as the essence of "the sense of wonder." It's really too bad.
Maybe so. I seem to remember thinking that it would be 950 years if the aliens responded immediately, but I'd have to check to be sure. Maybe I was thinking in terms of ignoring the Stargate retcon.wouldn't it be 5001? wasn't the message something like 1,000 years to get there, 1,000 years for a response?

Maybe there's a new administration. That would be hilarious.Maybe so. I seem to remember thinking that it would be 950 years if the aliens responded immediately, but I'd have to check to be sure. On the other hand, maybe it's been so long that they'd never respond at all. Maybe they'd be like the Preservers who perished long after spreading their obelisks around the universe, their technology having outlasted them.
