So, now that Peter Capaldi has been cast as the twelfth doctor, are you relieved, upset, disappointed, joyful beyond belief, impartial, or whatever?

I myself at first thought this was a bad move, but I'm willing to give him a chance. He looks a bit like William Hartnel at times, but I hope he surprises us and is not much like Hartnel at all (maybe because I don't really like the 1st doctor :p) I think the sonic cane (from an episode in series 6) would suit Capaldi's doctor.

I just found the 1st doctor a bit dull. It's probably because I've never seen any first doctor serial that I've fell in love with so far though. Each doctor apart from the 1st has at least one serial/episode I love. Then again, I did love the surviving episode of Celestial Toymaker. Maybe if I saw that serial in whole, I might like Hartnel. I'll probably love Tenth Planet too when it comes out separately on DVD. But right now, I'm not a Hartnel fan.

Haven't seen him in anything yet though I have heard of him. I'll go neutral until I see him in the role then.

Yes, but on the flip side, I don't think there's any chance they'd pick an actor the idea of whom I would not like. They would never pick a really bad actor for the role. We knew it was going to be someone fitting and good. Now since I'm unfamiliar with most of his work (outside of Torchwood), let's see how good he will be in here and what kind of Doctor he will turn out to be. I'd actually have to watch him as the Doctor, the announcement didn't tell me anything I didn't already know (i.e. that we will see a new fine Doctor soon enough)

Yeah, but I've not seen it. I've only seen Hartnel in:

    *An Unearthly Child
    *The Daleks
    *The Edge of Destruction
    *The Dalek Invasion of Earth
    *The Web Planet
    *The Time Meddler

Not I've not seen most of these in a couple of years, so I probably changed my taste a bit since then.

The thing is though, I've always preferred the future or present day stories by far to the past one. Plus isn't the Aztecs a fully historical story with no sci-fi elements other the doctor, TARDIS, and companions themselves?

Over the moon!! he's a brilliant actor and fan of the series from his youth, Cannot wait to find out how Moffat will write for his Doctor and what Capaldi does with the role. The future looks bright!

Great choice. I was hoping they'd go with another little known (but not necessarily young) actor like Matt or David but, having done two in a row, I can see the merit in them taking the opposite route and casting a recognisable actor. The fact that he is also a bloody excellent actor helps too and it's nice that the youngest ever will be replaced by the oldest since Hartnell (he's the first lead actor to be born before the series began since Paul McGann).

It's easy to imagine this Doctor being abrasive like his Malcolm Tucker but Capaldi is a versatile actor who could quite easily play a very gentle, sweet Doctor. Looking forward tO seeing what he does with it.

The thing is, I know I won't warm to Capaldi until at least his second series. Until late series 2, I didn't like Tennent much, and thought he was a bit of a bumbling idiot (although I was accustomed to Eccleston's dark no nonsense doctor), and I thought Matt Smith would replace Tennent as my favourite very soon after seeing him in The End of Time, but that never happened, and I've only really warmed to Smith quite recently actually, although he still isn't very high on my doctors list.

I thought I'd be ok with who they chose, but with a wait and see attitude. I never suspected it'd be an actor I knew, or one that I really liked.

So yes, i'm ecstatic with this casting and wish series 8 would be here now just so I can see how he plays it.

kinda says it all, but to add something he's older than I dared really hope, seen him in Children of Earth where he was really nice as a more serious guy, yet in the reveal show his face kept cracking me up, plus while smiling he has a sinister look too like our current president, and LOVE the teeth. Image searched him before though and he looked funny in The Thick of It.

I wonder if he's staying longer than most as he's already established a long career.

I felt the same way about Tennant, but mostly because Eccleston went out so soon. If we had had Eccleston for four seasons, I'd be more than welcoming of Tennant. I loved Matt Smith from the first episode for that reason. Now I expect the same to happen with Capaldi.

Beside myself with excitement at the moment. Utterly brilliant choice. I haven't been this happy since Eccleston was cast.

Unfortunetley, I wasn't that way with Smith. The thing is, Tennant was the Doctor I grew up with, so there was sentiment there, I got used to Tennant, and I didn't really like Moffat's style of writing (and still don't much).

It's very hard to say without knowing how he'll be written, but there is cause for optimism. At the very least, having a man in his mid-50s should mean we won't have any hyperactive hopping about and acting the loopy tit that's characterised the past two. It's no guarantee, but having a man closer to his pension than his 30s should mean he'll be more in keeping with the gentlemanly nature of the proper Doctors (that is to say, the first 8), rather than some prick from a trendy wine bar or an ex-miner binman yob.

I think he's a good choice, but judgement has to be reserved until I see him in the role and how he plays it.
