The thing about opinions is that they don't have to be remotely true. Some can even be total nonsense, but if it works for that person, then it's their thing.

My pet theory was always that the Enterprise-A was built from 'spare parts' left over from the Constituion refit cycle, similar to the space shuttle Endeavour. It's based on nothing but supposition, of course. A pulled-from-mothballs Constitution about to be retired works too. I think we all know the Yorktown tale from Gene comes from the Enterprise originally being called Yorktown in his initial treatments.
The real star of Star Trek, at least TOS, at least to a 60's kid, was always the "classic Enterprise." (Constitution class)
Just like the real star of the American space program wasn't any of the individual astronauts, it was always the hardware...the Saturn V rocket + Apollo module + LM.
There's almost an Art Deco quality to classic Enterprise. I would analogize it to the Chrysler building. There are lots of other skyscrapers that are bigger, more modern, more bells and whistles, but there's only one Chrysler building.

I like this theory. Works well with the Enterprise-A being a glitchy mess in STV.
I remember several gasps in the audience at that moment and a few cheers that it wasn't 'that other ship' as a friend put it.
Thank you. I thought it was a happy compromise. I would assume they built it, did whatever tests they meant (having never intended it for full service) and then it sat quietly in some drydock for a while collecting dust.
