    That's an overstatement.

    Or...

They will change their marketing strategy for the next movie.

They'll simply continue to emphasize those aspects of the movies that sell well in foreign markets. The next one will probably be more action-oriented and less talky than even this one. I'm sure they'll find a way to make it back to Earth for the climax, as well. ;)

They might trim the budget down a bit, but the next one will still have a very sizeable budget. They'll definitely make the next one a 3D release again. It's too important to the Asian box office not to.

This again ? I'd like someone to explain to me how the general public is supposed to care about a villain they never heard about.

I thought they liked the talking part in other parts of the world...

Not according to "Fast and Furious 6", "The Avengers" and a huge chunk of "Man of Steel".

There's plenty of talk in those movies.

Obviously not like "12 Angry Men", of course.

I hope their accounting is as bad as the current TV ratings system.

Maybe I'm alone here but I think the Nielson ratings couldn't be more inaccurate, I know they are making attempts to be more accurate but as far as polling goes they are a long ways off.

Weekend estimate: $690,000 for $224.3 million so far. The international gross is now $222.5 million for $446.8 million worldwide so far.

No one knows for sure but even assuming the general public has never heard of Khan even peripherally it could still potentially have stoked the hype machine from those who do. I do think that if you can excite the media it can spill over to the unwashed masses. I don't know that this would've happened but I think it's at least possible.

I wonder if Japan can potentially push it to $460m WW ?

Love the legs... just wish the first weekend would've packed more punch.

Japan netted 5-6 million for 2009 I think, so 460 is within reach I would say.

Not much of it is very important to following the movie.

Here is the markets just opened this last week and those that have yet to open, and how much Trek 09 made.

Spain ($3,995,000) just opened this week, so we should get another million and a half from this market.

    Greece ($537,000) opens this week.

    Venezuela ($569,000) the week after

    Argentina ($405,000) 08/22/13 and

    finally Japan ($5,822,000) 08/23/13

So far almost every market as earned more money. So using that as a template of just doing roughly the same STiD should earn overseas another 9 million dollars. It could easily based on other markets in similar areas do as much as 20 million more (I doubt it seriously though, as being late in the game, but it could happen).

It's looking like STiD wont earn 230 in the US. It looks to be reaching a ceiling of $229 (but if Paramount wants to milk it to an even number, some times studios will, but it not next to a big number like 250, or 300 for example).

Oversas it looks to be earning a minimum of 231.5.

That means at worst to expect 460.5 million world wide, to a best possible say of 471 million. I would now guess about 463 million.

So basically paramount spent 40 million more to generate 76 or so million. Since studios typically earn around 50% of ticket sales (more in the US, less overseas), Trek STiD will end up very likely earning Paramount and its backers roughly the same amount of profit as Trek 2009.

Under your own parameters, I doubt it.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean.

    yep.

    so?

I wasn't suggesting a 25 million dollar budget for STXIII, just saying that even if the budget's drastically slashed it shouldn't be an excuse for poor movie quality.

I think the point was.... in 1991 that was actually a big budget.

Only one film in 91 had a budget that we could consider huge and that was Terminator 2 which was somewhere between 90-100m, everything else never got as high as 40m or so. So while it was never a super blockbuster budget Trek's budgets have been on par with most other big movies at least in that era.
