Janeway's Decision to Kill Tuvix

I think it should be noted that for those considering Tuvix an entire civilization, it bears mentioning he is also a functionally extinct one. His civilization has no future beyond his own death.

And this thread has survived longer than Tuvix too.

Do you think they had a memorial service for Tuvix? What if they fired an empty torpedo pod into space?

I'm sure the Maquis laborers below decks that have to manufacture them from scrap metal appreciate that. Especially after wasting a torpedo makes them have to stop building the latest shuttle replacement.

Those people are Federation traitors, they're lucky they are even allowed to touch Federation metal like that.

They sang the Vulcan funereal hymn, "Amazing Grace." Torres played it on the Klingon bagpipes. Chakotay's tattoo wept. Neelix did not wish to attend, but was ironically hire to cater.

This thread has gone on long enough. In the same bullshit way Tuvok and Neelix live on in the creepy-ass Tuvix, Tuvix creepy-ass memory lives on in Tuvok and Neelix.

I don't view Tuvix as a new, separate being; Tuvok and Neelix became one and then were split back into two. Tuvok and Neelix now both have memories of Tuvix time on the ship. Technically, they just happened to do the exact same things, at the same times, in the same place for those few days as far as they are both concerned. There is not 3 people involved, only 2.

I also can't believe some people on this forum are comparing ENT: Similitude to this episode...

This is one of those episodes that I don't think the fans will ever agree on. Though if it set out to spark debate it worked.

You know who I feel I fricking sorry for?

Captain Planet.

They pulled a Tuvix on him every week.

Sure all he said was "With your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!" But where did his gimp "save-the-day,-now-you-can-murder-me-without-saying-thank-you" personality come from? That was the kids personalties mushed up into a perfect fieldslave ball... I think I remember an episode where they made Captain Planet without "the heart ring" and Captain Planet still saved the day, but he was a real asshole about it.

I swear I also remember that...

Anyone who's hired as captain, or anyone who's in a position of authority for that matter, must make controversial decisions, that's why they're appointed to be captain, it's their job to make a decision whether subordinates like it or not. There will always be disent and disagreement over decisions, but it's not the role of a captain to please everybody.

True.

But they are not put into a position to murder someone. They should also recuse themselves if they are emotionally involved esp. in the outcome.

That is a gross misinterpretation. A captain does make the final decisions and the subordinates need to follow them, yes. But that's not carte blanche to make unlawful and morally questionable decisions.

Besides, what would Janeway have done had the procedure gone wrong and Tuvix, Tuvok and Neelix died all at the same time?
