The Last of Us

I've played it 3 times. The surgeon dies every time. The other 2, the anesthetist and nurse presumably, are optional.

I agree with you about the decision. When people tell me Joel is evil and made the wrong choice, I ask them if they would kill an innocent person to cure a real world disease like AIDS or something. Remarkably, some say yes and some say no, but they don't think either choice makes the person "evil." That's the brilliance if the ending, IMHO.
 
Just finished the game. Maybe I rushed sections but it felt a bit short, though the last PS3 game I played was Red Dead Redemption so my perspective is probably a bit skewed.

I killed the Doctor, though I did think about it and based my decision on my low health and the fact he was armed. I didn't want to battle through the guards again so I put a bullet in his head. Left the others alone when it was clear they weren't going to interfere.

I didn't even know I had the option to not kill all of them! :lol:
 
I'm a bit farther into the game now, just got through the subway.

Great story/cinematography, average gameplay. Stealth mechanics have a few major issues. Like, they go for visceralness but then create this artificial supply shortage where there's absolutely no reason this guy should not carry around a pocket knife so he doesn't have to craft shivs that break after one use. And area barriers don't always look like barriers, and when the NPCs say "We can go in here!" It's not always obvious where they're referring to which has lead to a lot of unnecessary poking around the environment in the wrong area and unnecessary fights. And sometimes they don't give you important information until lack of that information results in a game over. Like, I try to strangle a clicker, die, and it says "Oh BTW trying to strangle a clicker is death, just FYI".

As a person who lives in Boston, though, the area design is extremely 'Uncanny valley'. Like, they have the right highways, a realistic looking capitol building, correctly named subway stations, random swan boats laying around, busts that look exactly like busts in Boston Common laying around. A ton of signposts that tell you "I am in Downtown Boston". Yet, nothing looks like the actual places in Boston where these things belong. (If you're going to make a place obviously Boston, give us a few Easter eggs! Like the duckling statues knocked over and mossy. Or at least make the skyline accurate.)

Very good game, but so many people are saying 'Best of Gen' and I can't possibly call a game Best of Gen if the main draw of the game is the story and cinematography. Cinematography isn't what video games are about.
 
I personally loved the gameplay. I thought the controls were fantastic. I never really experienced supply shortages until very late in the game. I've played through it 3 times now, and have NEVER been lost, not even the first time. It seemed to me that it was obvious where to go. Maybe even a little TOO linear in places. I would have liked to explore the world a lot more.

Also, maybe I'm forgetting something, or maybe its because I read all of the artifacts and things, but I was fairly sure that I knew you couldn't strangle clickers very early in the game. Possibly before one even showed up. In most instances, you can sneak around them anyway without having to dispatch them.

In short, for me, it was ALL good. It even turned out to be LONGER than I was expecting.
 
I saw this game last year(came out in june this year here in Australia) and what can I say about this game,It one of the best games i ever played.
 
If they were to make a sequel to this,
Joel would be the perfect bad guy.

I think a sequel should pick up exactly where it left off, only they get to Joel's brother's little village and find that it has been overrun with Clickers.

Show the story of Ish the sewer dweller, struggling to create a community and then it all going to ruin, ending with his death at the hands of Joel in a hunter ambush. :devil:
 
id like to think of The Last Of Us as the origin story of Naughty Dog's new heroine Ellie. Jump 10 years to the future when Ellie is 25 and how she is now a total bad ass.

Either that or she actually learns the truth after a Firefly attack on Tommy's Dam and vows to go complete the vaccine process. Ish escaped the sewers with a lady named Susan who lost her kids in he sewers. That could've happened a long time ago when Joel was a hunter, but since there were no Bloaters in the sewers, I'd guess the Ish incident was fairly recent... That and the fact that Joel was in the Boston area and Ish was in the Pittsburgh suburbs. It's likely their paths never crossed until the events in the game.
 
I would love to see a prequel right at the start again, seeing humanity collaspe.

It's not getting seriously lost. Like, you come out of the capitol building and Ellie says "We can go down those stairs!" Um, what stairs? I don't see any. So I go off in the other direction looking for stairs. That ends up a dead end. By the time I can come back soldiers have come out of the capitol building and I have to get through them.

The game is super-linear, but sometimes there are these little side areas just there for scenery but you can get into easily, and have outlets that it looks like you should be able to get into but really can't.

With SMTIV about to come out I might rather watch the rest of this on Youtube than play through it. Or just kick it down to easy so I can focus on getting challenge from games with better gameplay like XCOM or SMTIV. Games like Arkham City and Deus Ex HR just handle stealth so much better.
 
For me, I found that the lack of direction led me to explore the world more. Even though the story is linear, the world is huge and a lot if things are spread here and there. You will be rewarded for exploration.

I found the stealth mechanics to be on par if not better than Batman Arkham series. Different strokes I guess.

As for the authenticity of Boston, I don't know how much I can hold that against the game. I'm really looking forward to Ubisoft's Watchdogs mainly because Chicago is my home town and I really want to explore it. I guess it would be a downer if its not accurate to some extent.

My roommate and I typically enjoy the same type of video games, so one of us usually buys a copy, plays it through, and then hands it off to the other so he can play (except Arkham City; neither of us could wait for that one, so we played it simultaneously in different rooms).

He had just started "The Last of Us" today, and I kind of just want to sit and watch him. It was so fun the first time around!
 
I borrowed this from a friend and started playing and honestly, right now, I'm not greatly impressed.

I can certainly see the potential but right now all I've done so far is walked around, moved a ladder, walked around some more -this time in the dark- and shot a small handfull of "zombies." I see the potential but, honestly, I want to do something more than just wander around doing essentially nothing.
 
Yeah, must have been. Game has picked up now but, now, enough fighting people. I want to fight the ZOMBIES! Or, I'm sorry, fungi-infected humans.

I wasn't crazy about it at first either. I found the outbreak part pretty riveting but wasn't crazy about the game during the Tess section. However, here it is damn near 6 in the morning as I've played eight+ hours straight completing it. It kind of chronicles Joel's story though as he's rather disinterested himself at that point. :)
