So you throw in a few modern politicians with some of the more notorious conquerors and tyrants in history and ask us to choose which one should be Nagus? Maybe it's late and I'm tired, but I don't get it.

Just for the fun of it.

Effectively, is a modern politician better at being greedy than old-time tyrants?

i'd like to see nagus khans fearsome ferengi cavalry.

you seem to be equating historical conquerors and tyrants with modern politicians which doesn't work.

The main point was which characteristic would be better:
    1. A tyrant
    2. A manipulator
    3. A plain thief

Wow, how soon we forget. Back when H. Ross Perot was a presidential candidate in 1992 and 1996, there were a lot of jokes in fandom comparing him to a Ferengi, because he was a short, big-eared corporate magnate and gazillionaire. If any real-world political figure would be a cinch for potential Nagushood, it's Perot.

I pick Madoff as he seems the most Ferengi-like candidate. But seriously, Hitler? Joke or not, who's gonna vote for him?

I always thought of the Nagus first and foremost as a businessman, out to make profit, rather than a politician--seeing as how its not an ellected position, but rather one inherits (Zek's son in "The Nagus" had expected to assume the position after his father) or nominated to by the previous Nagus.

A real Nagus would be sending me a bribe to vote for them. I'm waiting candidates...

    Oh, Reagan totally.

Manipulating foreign politics to serve his business interests regardless of the consequences, giving huge contracts to his buddies, deregulating everything. Total Nagus.

Madoff would make a terrible Nagus. Any real Nagus, if he got that deep in a scheme would have an exit strategy and wouldn't get caught. Madoff would end up hanging from the Ferengi tower of commerce.

Ooh, Donald Trump! He looks AND acts like a Ferengi. And he built the Ferengi Tower of Commerce in real life!

Yes, but we have the benefit of posterity. The Germans were in a desperate position and undoubtedly had no idea what they were getting themselves into. In the wake of the holocaust, a vote for Hitler is something far different than it was in '33. Come on.

To be fair, they had a pretty good idea what they were getting themselves into. He most all of it in a book while he was in jail for trying to overthrow the government.

I have got to give credit to Obama

To the right he's a communist tyrant, to the left he's a lassez faire corporate shill.

He must be doing something right.

I don't know about for Nagus though. He gets involved in foreign wars and he has the government pay for enitlements. Isn't that the exact opposite of the Ferengi?

Okay. History is not my best subject. But at least they didn't see the mass murder coming, right? Maybe the Germans of the period had, in their ignorance, decided to oppress the Jews, but I do not believe the general populace was down with the idea of murdering them wholesale.
