Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoilers

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

Oh, please, this thread and forum is riddled with negative comments about anyone not swallowing nuTrek, while trying to tear down TOS.

Meh, the TOS forum is as bad - worse, really - where nuTrek is concerned.

nuTrek has one recent topic on the TOS forum--and the random posts, but certainly not at the volume of anti-TOS posts in this foseen here, where criticism of TOS actors, the TV series and movies can be found in several threads of page 1 & 2.

At the end of the day, it is all just talk, but the anti-TOS reaction seems very insecure.

So, what you're seeing is not so much an unfair criticism of TOS and Roddenberry, it's a criticism of the hyperbolic and unrealistic idealized image of them some fans have in their heads.

TOS did not span decades for no reason. Since the end of its NBC run in 1969, sci-fi TV and film saw other popular and/or influential productions come and go, but TOS--even into TNG/Berman era of series--continued to be regarded as a classic, while other productions are barely mentioned today, or are not as respected. That is not an idealized image, but the series' course through history.

We are not talking about Battlestar Galactica (1978).

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

What's going on is that we've got is a couple of people trying to bait others by talking about Paramount replacing Bad Robot when they know it's not going to happen ("but, you know, it could"), and other folks reminding them that we all know it's not going to happen.

The would-be provocateurs need a new act.

Back on topic:

Because he likes Superman and Iron Man but doesn't like Star Trek.

Sort of like why I go to Allman Brothers' concerts but avoid Lady Gaga.

And there we have it: some people really just want to see Iron Man.

The answer never needed to be any more complicated than that.

Because he likes Superman and Iron Man but doesn't like Star Trek.

That's logic. :)

It's very true, though. Why would the OP assume that somebody who likes superhero movies would give a two shits about Star Trek? I mean, realistically. They're all action movies, yes. But they're like completely different genres.

So you're really just agreeing with me in an oppositional manner.

Your claim is so ill-worded that I have no idea what you're saying, and your clarification didn't clarify, so I assumed you were talking about the general public. If you'd care to be clear about what you mean rather than let the confusion stand a third time around, I'd really appreciate it.

Again: only in response to criticisms and comparisons with new Trek made by other posters. Or perhaps you can point to posts made outside this context that bash TOS ?

At the end of the day, it is all just talk, but the anti-TOS reaction seems very insecure.

Insecure ? What are you talking about ?

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

Really, the need to come to the Abrams forum to big up TOS in the face of nuTrek's success could be as easily and accurately described as "insecure.". It's a meaningless, vapid claim.

Blibbityblabbing?

;)

Don't blame me. I was responding to Carcazoid, who wrote: "By 'others' I meant a great big giant group of people in a group, or not, otherwise undefineable than by the fact that they won't see the movie because they've been turned off by the blibbityblab."

Genres are a taxonomy. Fan preferences can span and overlap the various genres and are much more fluid at a personal and demographic level.

There is some intersection of fan interest between Star Trek, Iron Man, and Man Of Steel. Based on the box office numbers, the intersection is much smaller than I would believe and I'm perplexed. I wanted some input and started this thread.

There does seem to be an excessive amount of tilting and windmills.

My favorite complaint about the Abrams films is from one poster (who I shall not name) who complained about the E-surance ads, saying Star Trek had never done such blatant promotional ads before. :guffaw:

Nah, I think that tangent's been worked quite long enough, thank you.

That one, too. Done.

If TREK_GOD is genuinely interested in discussing a supposed anti-TOS bias born of insecurity, then he's quite welcome to start a thread dedicated to that topic in an appropriate venue. But that venue is neither this thread nor this forum.

And yet, we end up with over 16 pages of blippityblabbing :rommie:
Pretty amazing, isn't it?

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

BTW, Man Of Steel has made as much money domestically in eleven days as Star Trek did in its first month.

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

I'd really like to know... Man of Steel was just an out and out bad film that not only had objective pacing issues and hamfisted writing, but betrayed the character so badly that I can't even say it was Superman.

Iron Man... eh, big fun popcorn flick. Star Trek has an intellectual aura about it thanks to the series and then will never truly be as huge as a movie that, might be well written, but is all about the popcorn experience.

Still doesn't refute the simple nature that Star Trek is the better film of the three. Which is a bit surprising to me since I came into the year thinking MoS would be spectacular and Star Trek a big "meh". Exact opposite... well, no meh for MoS more like a "WTF is this steaming pile!"
