How nitpicky are these on a scale of 1-10?

1 - Marcus's reference to the Klingons as if they'd just made first contact with them which pretty much ignored the backstory of Enterprise

2 - no flashback to show the Botany Bay? Surely a great opportunity missed when Khan was telling us about being a relic from a distant time etc, to show a flashback as Section 31 open it up?

I don't think this was implied at all. They simply said that the tension was rising between them.

No need. Khan tells all there is to know. A bit fast, but sufficient.

I'm sure Marcus said something along the lines of "since we first learned of their existence, they've conquered two worlds" which is a bit odd considering we learned of their existence nearly 100 years ago. It sounds to me like he is saying it is more recent.

Ah, yes. I remember that to be an odd line in the movie. Maybe the empire wasn't on an expansionist phase back in Archer's time. I'd have to watch Enterprise again.

I don't recall that, but I'll keep an ear out when I see it again on Sunday. There was a model of the Enterprise NX-01 on Marcus' desk in his office.
I was hoping to see the Botany Bay too, or a montage flashback of the Eugenics Wars showing Khan in the red jumpsuit from "Space Seed"

There's a lot of stuff in STID that could have been expanded upon. A lot of backdrop is mentioned, but you could almost make a trilogy out of this movie.

It doesn't matter what happened in Roddenberry-Berman Star Trek. The Abrams films are in a different universe.

But it does matter. Because this spock prime/nero created universe has the same past as the prime universe prior to the destruction of the Kelvin. Which begs the question...Why is Khan so different than the TOS Khan?? He has an English accent now.

It only matters if you WANT it to matter. Montalban is dead and this Khan is younger. What were they going to do ? And before you start talking about Khan's ethnicity, I'd like to remind you that Ricardo Montalban wasn't exactly typical Sikh material.

Continuity is great and all, but it shouldn't be a straightjacket, because only fans who actually delve into Trek lore really care about it. Are you going to prevent yourself from telling a great story because a small percentage of your viewers are obsessed with decade-old details ?

And by the way, this is me saying this. I'm obsessed with decade-old details.

And a model of the NX test module from Enterpise's First Flight. That itself is pretty damn obscure. Yeah, whatever else anyone wants to accuse the movie of, it certainly didn't ignore Enterprise.

This is a continuity in which Enterprise is the only previous series that happened...that's kind of scary to think about.

Yep. Who cared about the switch in Saaviks? Kirstie Alley fans. And sticklers for continuity. And Robin Curtis and her agent.

I did find the line about the Klingons a bit odd, even forgetting Enterprise... Only two worlds? Just seems like a minor threat at best. Unless we're talking about Federation member worlds. Which would mean the Klingons were actively invading Federation territory.

Picard referred to the "disastrous First Contact" with the Klingons, which led to decades of war.

We saw Archer go against Vulcan wishes to return Klaang to his homeworld in "Broken Bow" (ENT) and, later, the episode "Judgment" where Archer is put on trial and sent to Rura Penthe. Fans complained at the time that it wasn't nearly "disastrous" enough, but all those niggly things - and many offscreen events in the interim - could add up to disaster when viewed from the 24th century.

Lots of wiggle room for all manner of sabre rattling.

To "Khan tells all..." I remember commenting to my husband at the time, " That's a big block of exposition right there." I know, it would take way too long to show rather than say, but it was still a lot all at once.

Although I _did_ care about the switch to Valeris. Saavik would've made more sense.
