Gotcha, but that's because Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith had especially good weekday numbers, so there was less room for a big Friday increase. Attack of the Clones had a more regular Thursday-to-Friday increase of 98.7% going into its second weekend.

Also the Star Wars films opened on Wednesday so much of the initial demand is burned off before the weekend, hence the lower Thursday-Friday increase.

That would be more of a factor for their opening weekends than their second weekends.

Edit to add: From BoxOffice.com on Twitter:

About as expected for F&F 6. Epic looks to overperform while Hangover III underperforms.

Hopefully Star Trek ends up nicely in 3rd place on about $48m. Wont be long now till we get the numbers :)

EDIT: Unless its only the openers that get the early numbers in which case its a long wait :)

So, as of yesterday, it's make back its budget.
    Are we pleased?

    Absolutely.

There's already apparently talk about who's directing the next one. Joe Cornish is one of several folks mentioned.

One would guess that they'll keep the budget to 150 million or less.

I am not certain, but I think Star Trek Into Darkness needs to make $580m worldwide to make back its production and marketing budget. Hopefully it makes it into profit after the DVD, Blu-Ray and TV sales are done.

The studio doesn't get all of the box office, so making a production budget back takes a lot more than the box office gross simply equally the budget.

I don't think children care about the financial workings of the movie industry. Adults might be interested, though.

Anyway, studios don't necessarily look to make back total costs - production, marketing and distribution - from theatrical box office alone. DVD, Blu-ray and TV revenue are a big part of the business model, although DVD and Blu-ray are weakening.

For a film of STiD's budget level $500-600 million worldwide would make the studio very happy, the mid 400s would make them reasonably happy, while the low 400s would be disappointing, but enough for a sequel at a reduced budget.

I really hope any budgetary constraints don't impact on the scale of the next movie - in the sense of it's overall cinematic scope and grandeur. I know many would prefer a more "intimate" piece, but I'm not certain that's the way to secure Trek's long term future.

They can do quite a lot with 150 million dollars, still.

i watched the Total Recall remake the other day, it was made for $125m and the visual effects and action set pieces were very good! I don't think it will make much difference.

Yep, 125 million dollars worth of mind numbing boredom, and they didn't even give me a Johnny cab!

JJ's movie cost so much because he likes to use practical sets and FX. With some tweaking, more set extensions, green screen, and more CGI, the movie could easily have been made for $150 million.

Paramount spent somewhat less money on Ghost Protocol, the fourth Mission Impossible film, than they did on the third and made a great deal more money with a slightly higher percentage of it coming from the foreign markets. In fact the foreign percentage rose some with every MI film.

On the third one, they didn't even make back their production cost on the domestic release.

They're so anxious to do a fifth that Cruise just dropped out of Warner Bros The Man From Uncle because production on MI 5 has been moved forward.

Pity there's no one who can explain it.
