I saw it as a bit of foreshadowing of Kirk's and Carol's future relationship so I didn't think it was a useless scene.

I also don't see how that scene promotes an unhealthy or unrealistic body image. Alice Eve looks like a normal woman to me in terms of body fat.

This type of scene not only degrades women, but sets an unrealistic ideal for every woman to attempt to obtain.

Oh, please. No one is expected to look like a movie star. This is a fad that's existed since the 30s or longer, and it's not more true now than it was then.

The human body is a beautiful thing and we like looking at it. Acting all shy about it and hiding it as much as possible is probably more damaging than showing it regularily.

Hell, she wasn't even naked. What's the big deal ?

Yeah, but that's the thing. In this movie we didn't get that balance. Last movie, it was Uhura and Kirk (and Gaila) that were in their undies. This movie only showcases Eve's character, and she's posed in such a way that makes it look like she hoped Kirk would turn around and take a picture. Anyway, I guess a shot of a lean, topless, Spock was too much to hope for, lol.

Kirk was in his underwear in Into Darkness. And if you wanted a lean, topless Spock well... you'd have to get a different actor.

Oh, I know what scene you're talking about and my response is not really. It's in the dark, extraordinarily blink-and-you-miss-it brief, and you don't see his entire body on "display" like you see Eve's well-lit and ready-for-the-camera bod. So, for me it doesn't count. In ST09, Uhura and Kirk's body exposure was about the same and roughly done in the same way.

And Zachary could look nice shirtless. Tone up a bit and lose the chest/arm hair, and he'd look quite nice. I know he didn't look that great in STID, but what I'm telling myself after seeing the film is that he was "coping" with food for having to act our that script.

That's exactly what I was thinking earlier on when someone mentioned that scene in another thread. No one complained about Daniel Craig's ocean scene in Casino Royale, or Kirk's underwear scene in Trek '09, or Hemsworth's scene in Thor.

But a woman in underwear ? Oh, that's objectifying and sexist and will anybody think of the children ?

I saw breasts in 80s action movies when I was 7 and that never bothered me. In fact I didn't even notice.

Well, I don't know about complaining, I didn't really care much for the film so it's not like I'll be watching it again, but it did seem gratuitous.

Thor and ST09 didn't seem that gratuitous, and I think I already explained my reasoning for ST09. No one also complained about Zoe Saldana's partial nudity in that film for the same reasons, I think.

There it is. "Normal." The normal woman is 5-4, 140-150 pounds, size 12-14. Does she look like a size 14?

What he misses is that the Kirk scene was not gratuitous while the Marcus scene was. Kirk was in bed with 2 aliens so we see him undressed. The same way there was no criticism of the Gaila scene. Even when Uhura walks in and gets undressed it's understandable because she just walked into her own dorm room and doesn't expect Kirk to be there.

The Marcus scene on the other hand was just random. She is talking to Kirk to propose a mission. He hasn't even heard the idea yet, let alone approved it. Yet she decides to walk into a shuttle and change clothes in front of Kirk. Once Kirk approves the mission she still had plenty of time to change uniforms while Kirk asks McCoy to join the mission. There was no reason to change uniforms right then and there. No adult would change clothes in that situation.

That's what really makes it gratuitous. The only reason the character even takes the action is for the sake of showing her. In all the other similar scenes the characters actions are at least understandable.

But then, I'm told that I represent everything that is Wrong and E-Vile in Trek fandom.

I've seen the 09 movie a bunch of times, and not once was Zoe Saldana partially nude.

You know, when I was in high school we'd go on band trips. When it came time to change into our uniforms, we'd all change clothes on the same bus. Boys, girls, underwear all over the place. But I digress.

All this talk about nudity in a Trek film is not only inaccurate, it's overreacting to a non-issue.

By the way, HaventGotALife, do you think women who are smaller than the average "normal" sized woman should feel bad about themselves? Should Alice Eve feel ashamed that she likes her body and is more than willing to show a bit of it on the screen? I mean, you're talking about shame and all of that, but what about her? She chose to show it on the screen. It wasn't presented as the ideal woman, or what women should have to achieve, unlike magazine and beauty articles which do. She was just being herself, and she was wearing underwear. Where is the crime?

I don't understand your weird measurements. So I have no idea what a size 14 is. However, I do know that I know enough women who would or do look like Alice Eve in that scene as far as the body fat is concerned (obviously, they don't look exactly like her) to not find her out of the ordinary in that regard.

They touch up pictures all the time. Again, no one is expected to look like this. And that some jobs require some bodies is not new. Hell, actors gain or lose weight for roles all the time.
