$400 million would probably lead to a budget decrease. The higher it can score above that the better its chances of getting a sequel at a similar budget level.
They made a mistake, if they had marketed Cumberbatch as Khan it might've done better. But it took us how long just to get a generic name? We knew nothing about him. You can have as good and powerful a performance as you like, but if your marketing is just him looking like a meanie moo with his back turned...
I disagree, I suspect quite a few people in the UK would regonise the name. You've already mentioned Sherlock.
I think what you might actually mean is. "No one outsdide of the UK knows him."
Which is a great shame and their loss really as he's an outstanding actor. Hoping this is his breakthrough role.

Seriously, guys, give it time. Give Word of Mouth time to work, give actual numbers time to come in.
Cumberbatch is very well known outside of the U.S.. I still believe his casting was inspired and had vast potential, even as Khan.
The problem is, the core of any movie is the writing. Remember what happened with Prometheus last year? It had huge buildup as well, but the story fell apart. Eventually, so did the grosses. The fanboys hated it because the plot was a contrivance.
FWIU, the plot here is vastly better than that of Prometheus, but only by the hair of the last dog. The Dark Knight held people not because of the Joker himself, but because of the conflict in the movie. Batman v. Joker.
People need a stake in the movie. Did the writers provide them with enough of one?
And yes, let's get more real numbers from Domestic to see what's happening over the weekend.

Again, I have no clue what the obsession with Del Toro is. He's not some bankable name actor, he's a character actor whose better days are well past him. He really hasn't done anything of note since the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean I guess your can call the borefest known as "Che" as an accomplishment, but he's far removed from the days of "The Usual Suspects" and "Traffic."

BTW, here's the odd thing. This movie is getting strong, positive reaction on social media across the board. I think that bodes well for WOM sales into the 2nd and 3rd weeks of release. IOW, Trek may have long term legs that we can't see right now simply because of what one person tells another about the acting in the movie, setting the plot aside.

I really think you guys are jumping the gun quite a bit. Patience is a virtue.
I can't believe the low numbers! STID was a very good movie and deserved to do better. But Paramount will consider this a disappointment and very likely not do a sequel at this point.
They may do a sequel or go with a different team. But I think they will keep the budget the same or roll it back to where it has to be more creative with less money. Worked well in ST:TWOK and ST:TVH.

It will get a sequel, it's a disappointment but not a disastrous flop and they'll take heart from the hopeful OS takings.
Foreign numbers are the real wildcard here and it'll be a while before we fully know how they play out given the staggered international release.

Nothing reminds me that we live in an instant generation than seeing this kind of thing. Now I have nothing against anyone here, but foretellings of doom when the opening weekend isn't even over, saying it's a disappointment, that they might not get a sequel, is just, it's too soon. There hasn't been time for anything to happen.
It's like baking an apple pie that takes an hour; 20 minutes in, people are already saying it's ruined, and that it probably tastes terrible. Let the damn pie bake, folks*.

Who was lining the red carpet at the world premiere of STiD in Sydney? A few older fans in full Star Trek costume (the rest had scrounged tickets in online contests) and groups of screaming and squealing teen girls, dressed to the nines, in hopes of catching the eye of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and JJ Abrams to take selfies on their iPhones. And other teens holding up banners professing undying devotion to Benedict Cumberbatch.
And now you really regret buying that damned orchard.
