STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

Re: STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening

Well, with Fast and Furious and Hangover III waiting in the wings, it better make a bunch quick. Hopefully word of mouth will give it a good Memorial day and beyond.

Looks like the Great Gatsby will not be all that big a deal judging by the reviews.

Crossing fingers!

That's not much competition. A warmed over 6th entry in the venerable F&F series that no one watches anymore, and a lame comedy sequel to a lame sequel? ST09 had more competition.

Fast Five did $626 million in business, I wouldn't under estimate it...

EDIT: LOKAI of CHERON beat me to it. :techman:

Fast Five did $626 million worldwide! Did you know ?

Only little tidbit I have heard is from Germany where it is apparently getting 25% more admissions than ST09 which translates to 75% more $$$ so far but very early days!

Also heard (forums.boxoffice.com) that the presales in Hong Kong are low and Trek is not expected to do well in Asia..

I won't settle for anything less than $1 trillion.

Boxoffice.com tracks tweets about movies.

Yesterday the positive:negative ratio on STID was 9:1. Today it's 24:1.

Flake, I'll merge your triple post this one more time, but you do this a lot. Seriously: You have an "Edit" button. Make use of it.

Yes sorry it's a bad forum habit I suppose. I think of something else to say usually after I have already posted, it is as if the act of posting immediately inspires another thought! .... TBH my intention here was simply to make more work for you to do of course

Edit: :)
Star Trek into darkness is doing better than IM3 did in Germany apparently, but Germany is one of the strongest markets for Star Trek yet one of the weakest for IM3.

Iron Man 3 did 9million dollars for opening wkend in Germany.
ST09 did 4.2million dollars in Germany opening weekend.

Maybe it can get to 7or8 million in Germany ? Perhaps 9m for the 4-day weekend? That would be excellent IMO. Long way to go until there are firm numbers though. These whisper numbers are for the previews which I assume are the midnight showings. No idea if it can keep up with Iron Man over the whole weekend.

Ha! Well that's a shocker, that movie had no buzz at all. Must have made $526 mill of it overseas.

Re: STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening

Wrong again - it made about 210 million dollars domestically. The sixth one is tracking for a 108 million dollar four-day opening.

Trek 2009 made about 260 million.

Into Darkness is going to get one weekend at #1 - FF6 will knock it off next week. You can expect Trek to drop 45-50 percent in the second weekend. Competition's stiff - Hangover III may even knock it down to third.

STiD will definitely be in third place in its second weekend, but that won't preclude it from rolling up a good final tally. Its legs will likely be shorter than those of Star Trek - that's typical of sequels - but the bigger opening should get it to $275-300 million domestic. If the foreign box office improves and brings in $250-300 million then Paramount will be dee-lighted.

250-300 foreign box office seems optimistic to me.

Though I'm naturally pessimistic, it seems Trek is doubling its take in a lot of foreign and is naturally strong domestically. They've just spent a lot on marketing, but ultimately there is still a stigma against Trek for some reason - it took super hero movies multiple movies, a lot of them bad before getting rid of it.

250-300 foreign box office seems optimistic to me.
So far its posting impressive gains in territories where Trek has traditionally been strong and huge gains in territories where Trek has traditionally been weak. If the percentage increases in foreign territories continue as it rolls out worldwide then $250-300 million foreign box office could well come to fruition.
