    And my non spoilerish review:

Those who loved the last film should really enjoy this one. Those determined to hate JJ's efforts will probably be boasting how they knew it would be bad.

All performances were excellent, and everyone seemed to have plenty to do. Wonderful one-liners, lots of quirky little name drops for the diehards, glimpses of some very cool aliens and crewmembers - and I'm truly amazed just how many visuals and plot points and little surprises remained under wraps right up till the film started screening!

You could also see that the writers have been enjoying the fannish banter on TrekBBS for years, and numerous debates still going here were addressed in the film, and very well! Several plot points were turned on their ears, and while some were very predictable, others came out of left field. I had not guessed the real reason Carol Marcus screams in the trailer!

JJ actually asked us not to go blabbing about the spoilers, so I won't. I had a really great time and, on numerous occasions, I was literally on the edge of my seat. It was fun anticipating each beat with nickyboy and Jean Prouvaire (whom you might recall from the early days of TrekBBS) and none of us could believe we were really there. (I was told I was being given a free double pass for my "outstanding services to Australian Star Trek fandom since 1980". Coolness!)

For non-Star Trek cinema-goers, this is an action film with lots of witty lines and character arcs. I loved it, but you all knew I'd say that, didn't you. It's a fun night at the cinema and will withstand many, many repeat attendances!

That's okay, a lot of other folks who were in the audience are sharing what they saw, and doubtless quite a few more will after the Austin show this evening.

Why not? It was certainly quicker than when I had to do this:

Yes, I suspected that but then again, I suspect I am going to as well. What a memorable night for you.

Nice pics Therin. Sounds like the whole event was a blast. And I'm surprised too that you brought the puppet.

Cool, glad to hear a good review from someone who actually LIKED the first movie. Looking at the footage and trailers, I just have a hard time believing it could really be as disappointing as the Abrams-haters are saying.

Abrams haters are just picking at the spoilers.

A bunch of spoilers written on a page by an internet randomer does not do a very good job of conveying a movie to someone. You have to see it :) The people hating it wanted to hate it from day 1.

Therin, you saw it, right? I don't want details but just two questions.

    1) how was the music/score? Any standouts?

    2) how would you rate the whole thing on a scale of 1-10?

    Thanks,
    indrani.

Thanks for the review! I'm sure to love it too. Glad you had a good time:)

I'm especially interested in long-debated TBBS questions being answered. I can't wait! *16 LONG days and counting*

We had a great time. A big huge thank you to Therin for making me his +1.

Paramount AU did a good job of organizing the event.

I'm a Trek (and SF movie) soundtrack fanatic. I'd recently heard the John Harrison theme that was released on Youtube and that was nice and creepy. The callbacks to the previous movie's soundtrack were hauntingly appropriate. It really makes the previous soundtrack longer and more interesting. I'm looking forward to hearing the soundtrack in isolation, then revisiting the movie.

While awaiting JJ's arrival on the red carpet, we were inside seated, watching a big screen, with Twitter flow to the left. There was a song played through a few times, and I suddenly realised the chorus had the lyrics "... into darkness" in it. I'm assuming this song will be on the soundtrack? It was lovely.

Tricky. My favourite Trek cinema experience is still ST:TMP, and is probably tied with ST (2009). This film was almost as wonderful as ST (2009); its banter between the characters is often better, and I was certainly on the edge of my seat several times. Moreso than the previous one.

But I cried in ST (2009)'s Kelvin scenes and only felt tears triggering with "Into Darkness". I imagine a few other fans may have been quite distraught at times, last night, but it didn't pull on my heartstrings the same way. Almost, but not quite.

In some ways, TMP and ST (2009) are 9 out of 10 for me, simply for the total absorption effect. This one is possibly an 8, on an equal footing with "Star Trek: First Contact".

As a SF thriller/action film - and I get quite bored by regular action films - "Into Darkness" had many, many moments that were a resounding 10.

Oh, and there were indeed some wonderful easter eggs from the IDW "ST Ongoing" comics! I must go through them and make a list!

Therin of Andor, would you say there's a fair bit in the film not covered by the trailers? I'm a little worried they've spoilt all the major setpieces of the film.

Heaps of new stuff. I expected I'd seen clips of everything, but there were many, many surprises!

Re the 3D: JJ did warn that because the film was so new that maybe some of the Ds wouldn't work, but all three did and you soon forgot it was a 3D film - until something wild would happen!

A Star Trek film with a song? That's just... weird. And cool.

Well, there were words to Ilia's Theme (and Shaun Cassidy even released a version as a tie-in to TMP).

ST IV had "I Hate You".

There is also a song by Hiroshima on the ST V soundtrack, "The Moon's a Window to Heaven". (And there was always "Row, row, row your boat.")

Not usre if it was mentioned, but who's the computer voice in the movie? Assuming it even speaks this time.

I don't think anyone asks it a question, actually. I could be wrong, but we started analyzing the film as the credits were rolling.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I remember big films like STTMP and SW used to have fancy program books with cast and crew info, etc., sometimes as giveaways or sold. Do studios still do that?

Thanks for all your non-spoilery info Therin.

Did you get to keep the pins as souvenirs or were they the 'ticket' you had to hand over for entrance?
