Proving that I sometimes have TOO much time on my hands, I went back through the screencaps and plotted each station's officer by shirt color (that were visible).

Shit, couldn't Orci and Abrams have at LEAST gotten the science and communications stations right on a TOS-era Kirk Enterprise? The science station was directly behind Kirk only once...in ST:TMP. Then in the second movie it moved to his right rear similar to the original series and a standing console with no chair replaced where Spock was.

Look at the trailer screenies again. The science station is off to the side, the only thing right behind the captain is a weird wall of cool lights. That diagram is based off of the first publicity photo, but doesn't take into account the new trailer stuff.

I'll take another look. Thanks for telling me that.

That PLUS the "standing station" to Kirk's right is manned by a blueshirt. That could be Spock's "coordinating" duty station as Chief Science Officer, with the one or two stations on the outer rim doing the actual work.

Maybe I should try another diagram some time. I'll have to add those pit stations in the front, and the wall of blinkies (which looks pretty stupid, imo) at the back of the bridge. And it's pretty clear now that the helm consol is elevated and the hostess is level with the outer secrion...

Anyone ever update this? Now that the new film is coming? Did anyone ever figure out what the hostess stands were meant to be?

That was answered in "Star Trek: The Art of the Film" - they are auxiliary science and communication stations. Presumably designed so Spock or Uhura can talk to the captain in the same camera frame while seeming to still be working.
