New Star Trek Into Darkness Video

Thank you for posting this clip. I watched it as well as the 3 trailers, none of which I had yet seen. I poked around the forum and am sad to say that I still cannot generate the slightest interest in this film. None of the trailers hint at any story more compelling than yet another generic Hollywood summer action movie with a standard motivating factor for the main characters of "let's go get that son of a bitch bad guy". They also seem to be continuing with the characterization of Kirk as a reckless rule breaker ('cause everyone knows rebels are cool - at least in generic Hollywood action pictures).

I'll still give kudos to the cast who seem valiantly to be trying to scrape some sense of their iconic characters out of the Olive Garden fettucini alfredo blandness of the whole thing.

You do rrealize that trailers are made to get your interest so they will show a lot of the exciting stuff. That doesn't mean that this movie is without a story or is just wall-to-wall action.

It all feels very much like TOS to me, with a shot of adrenaline. The Kirk-McCoy interplay in particular, as mentioned by others up-thread, was excellent.

Although the purpose to the main story is to set up Kirk breaking the PD, the first nine minutes also strikes me as a kind of "short" (e.g. like a "Three Stooges" story shown before a feature film) that stands separate to introduce us to the characters in action and the kind of adventures they've probably been having over the previous year.

One quick exchange says it all. McCoy and Kirk are running through the red vegetation, dodging spears, and McCoy shouts, "I hate this!" Kirk responds, "I know!" In other words, this is just another day at the office. Neat.

Heck, with just a little work, that nine minutes probably could've been fleshed out into a 42 minute stand-alone TV episode.

On the other hand, one could say that, with just a little work, every episode of TV Trek could have been whittled down to 9 minutes and remained entertaining.

To not be spotted by the indigenous peoples... damned prime directive

Well, one could argue that they are already violating the Prime Directive by stopping the volcano and saving the people. Who are they to decide that those particular inhabitants should live?

If they didn't interfere with the natural order of things and permit that particular civilization to be wiped out by the volcano, maybe a different one evolves at a later point.

The Prime Directive is a funny thing that can be interpreted in so many ways, what's the point of even having it?

I feel like they could have reworded the "needs of the many..." line to be more of a homage and less of the classic line being reused. Still a cool nod though.

It's not like Spock invented the axiom (he was the first to mention it on screen in TWOK, granted)
In Enterprise, I believe, it has been canonized (through T'Pol) to originate from Surak. So, being part of an official philosophical / religious doctrine it probably should not get twisted. Me thinks.
