I was just going to suggest Uncle Buck. Another favorite is Doc Hollywood. Can't go wrong with some John Candy-
Uncle Buck
Cool Runnings
Home Alone
The Great Outdoors
etc
Mr. Holland's Opus (awesome movie about an at first unwilling music teacher and how he influenced his students and in return was influenced by them)
You all remember that ordinary people, "civilians" find it difficult to watch more than one movie a day?
I rarely even have time to watch any movies at all anymore, so I really have no excuse for creating such a long list. But that's why I segmented it into genres, so that her friend can skip right to the ones she would like. And I'm hoping that she's already seen some of them! And surely someone must have mentioned "Airplane!"
Just to be a nerd and point out, but it came out in 1987. Unless you meant to put 80s"Near Dark," directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is easily the best vampire movie of the 90s.

The hell with it. I'm gonna double down on the nerd, and put in a word for....
Vamp and the writer of Near Dark (and Blue Steel and The Hitcher, as well), Eric Red.
