Was Voyager designed by Sanford and Son?

Quite a bit (if not most) of the look of the Voyager was determined by the show's producers. During its design, the ship went from being something of a rugged "super runabout" to a mini Galaxy-class ship.

If i am not mistaken, The defiant class was the one built to be a mini Galaxy class ship. And the defiant was in a word... "dope"
The Defiant was built to be a no-frills ship designed mainly for battle, whereas the Voyager could do everything a Galaxy-class ship could do, but in a smaller package.

Im sorry dude but i would much rather be trapped in the delta quadrant on a ship with a cloaking device and pulse phasers..

Personally, I think that looks like crap.

The lines are blocky, the proportions are poor, and those nacelles are terrible. It has the elegance and grace of a 70s station wagon.

Also, the only reason they had the folding pylons Is because they could, or rather, finally had the ability to do so.

Voyager actually had very good production values and some beautiful sets, it's one of the good things about the show.

Also, I *love* the pivoting warp engines. Come on, it added something new and refreshing to starship design that we hadn't seen yet and wouldn't really see again until those beautiful Vulcan ships in Enterprise where the rotatable ring acted as the warp drive.

"Dude," no one really has a choice when it comes to a ship being trapped somewhere.

But to her credit, the Voyager proved to be an extremely resilient vessel that did survive seven years in frequently hostile territory without Starfleet support.

I disagree with a lot of that, but I think that that the some Starfleet vessels probably should be more utilitarian in nature rather than stylish.

I always thought the movable nacelles were to counter the universe destroying warp fields from the TNG ep "Forces of Nature" ? We just watched this on Netflix, not well done, even if they were trying to make a point about the environment.

Maybe because its a model but this design looks horribly retro... There were a couple of (type 9 i believe?) shuttles on Voyager that I think mirrored this concept.

The Runabouts from late season TNG and DS9 were the most dope (meaning good) looking auxiliary craft vessels ever. Im surprised there werent at least 3 on Voyager ... Seems no deep space exploration type vessel should be without them.

Enterprise E "captains yacht" was also a great concept.

This early prototype looked far better, IMO:

The saucer and neck, combined with the exaggerated secondary hull always managed to destroy that rough concept.
It's much better in the concept sketches:

Obviously, the Runabout parts still don't fit in and are one of the elements that would've needed to be modified in later sketches.

That was a rationale that more or less came after the fact the ship was going to have moving nacelles. The idea never made it onscreen, though.

This is the first Im hearing of that being the reason for the angling nacelles... Even tho the episode was good, I always thought that Warp 5 starfleet directive was ridiculous.

Glad they killed the concept off with DS9.. "Limit the defiant to warp 5 but allow it to cloak" would have been insanity..

It Does???? Was it ever used? I am re-watching Voyager from the start again

I only remember the groovey angle headed type 9 shuttles and the delta flyer that could do transwarp..

Actually... the episode where tom breaks the warp 10 barrier (and goes forward/back in time and eventually mutates into a lizard.. then knocks up the captain... ) wasnt that transwarp also?

If transwarp was determined to be unstable, what kind of propulsion does the Delta Flyer have?

What do you mean?

Voyager clearly had a Captains yacht first.

VOY also used an updated version of the TNG shuttles in some episodes (e.g., the one where Tuvok crashes on a moon with that group of "kids").
The Aerowing was supposed to be docked on the underside of the saucer, but apparently the producers never managed to take their head out of their ass long enough to notice that the art department had added such a detail. That's how the Delta Flyer was developed to solve a problem that didn't exist in the first place.

sayonara, why would the delta flyer have transwarp? its just a fancy big shuttle. too big to fit through the shuttlebay doors apparently!

(also, putting the quotes afterwards is slightly annoying because you start reading the post and wonder what you're talking about.)

Because it's one of Tom's Magic Ships(TM) that he can manufacture at will. The laws of physics don't apply to those. Just look at the Threshold Shuttle. And that was only his first try.

That probably refers to Threshold, where they modified a shuttle to reach Warp 10. For a long time I thought Trek couldn't sink any lower, then we got ENT with its third season and the time-traveling Vampire Space Nazis.

It's because our Captain is so humble, she doesn't need an iconic chair.

Pft, if you notice, Janeway will take -every- opportunity to stand at a higher elevation than the person she's talking with. :p

That's because she's 5'5" and Tom, Tuvok and Chakotay are all over 6 feet tall!

Teacake... I don't mean to correct you... but I'm afraid Imust. :wtf:

Its not that our Captain is so "humble" that she doesn't need an iconic CHAIR. :vulcan:

Its because our CAPTAIN is herself iconic... She doesn't need a fancy chair. :p
