The story as it has just been posted.

Unless somebody misunderstood whatever they were told or Disney and Lucasfilm change their minds and resume production on the series it appears that as of tonight The Clone Wars is over after a pretty impressive and successful five-season run.

Thoughts? I for one was hoping we'd get one more season out of the show even if it were abbreviated with a truncated number of episodes just to give some much-anticipated closure to many of the personal storylines on the show and have everything flow a little more smoothly and logically into the events of Episode III, but it appears the bigwigs at Disney and in Lucasfilm had different ideas.

Looks like the scene of Ahsoka - now no longer a Jedi - wandering off into the Coruscant sunset and down the staircase of the Jedi Temple was the closing scene of the weekly television series. It's entirely possible any unaired scripts that are currently in the midst of production by the animators and voice artists can see release on DVD and BluRay (Disney loves that kind of thing, as we all know) so we might see at least a little more squeezed out of the animated universe, but it looks like the series itself is now dead.

Wasn't it always intended to be five seasons?

I personally think you're jumping the gun a tad with this. You should wait till it's been confirmed by Lucas/Disney and not a random fan site.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end that series after five years as per the plan, but of course Disney will come up with a new animated series for kids to take up the story, or jump to a different time period, or both.

They didn't spend 4 billion dollars just to sit on their hands. The sensible thing is to follow Ahsoka's story since they've established her as a character now. Why throw away all that work?

2 things about what's really going on

    1) Disney is moving the CW to Disney XD or

    2) this is just total bullshit.

There are a few people currently saying this could be an act of misdirection by Disney and Lucasfilm and that the series has been cancelled, but only on Cartoon Network. Disney might decide to transplant the series to Disney XD to bolster its schedule and ratings there (which aren't terribly high as many, many American households don't get XD as part of their cable or satellite packages).

Jedinews has a history of posting generally accurate information, though, and they helped break new developments in the past. Were it from some basement blog or no-name website without a good track record with the fans I wouldn't give the story much if any heed. They're one of the biggest and most succesful SW fan and collector sites in Europe.

We'll see. But the current consensus seems to be that some sort of axe has indeed fallen on the series.

FWIW, from a March 6 interview with Filoni:
IGN: There are so many questions, obviously, about the future of the show, but back last summer at Celebration, you talked about work being done on Season 6. We know that there are completed episodes that we haven’t seen. Might we get an announcement one way or the other about when and where we’ll be seeing that, any time soon?

Filoni: [Laughs] Well, that’s the interesting part, this wait-and-see thing, I know, for fans. But there are more stories to tell, and as I’ve said, we’ve been working on them for awhile. I’ll be excited when we can share more details with you about that, but at this point, there isn’t really much I can say. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say. Sadly, for you guys. [Laughs] I see cool stuff every day… it’s totally unfair!

IGN: That’s very encouraging, because there are some more extreme rumors saying, “The show is over!” But I kept thinking, “But they’ve been making episodes, so that can’t be the case!”

Filoni: Right? Always in motion is the future. This is where I can be very vague and quizzical. [Laughs]

My interpretation: That sounds like someone who doesn't think the series is going to end ... but might undergo some changes.

If I had to place a bet on why it would be the legal backlog of paperwork and agreements... too many hoops to jump through and the bean counters concluded that killing the series > all the paperwork and legalese of going forward with one more season under the Disney banner... something no one though of in the likely years of planning this sale??

    Greasy fucks! What about Clovis?
Executives love movies and not television shows. Look what happened with Star Trek.

Disney probably wants the focus from now to be the new trilogy and its spinoff films. They do certainly seem to be distancing themselves from the prequels as much as they can (cancelling the 3D re-releases of AOTC/ROTS).

If Disney does decide to produce a new animated series no doubt It'll feature characters from the new trilogy.

I'm wondering if perhaps it'll be coming back, but in a different form, or on Disney XD. I read that interview and I was wondering why he was being so vague. I would have thought if it was or was not coming back in it's current form he would have just said he couldn't say, instead of being all vague and mysterious.

If the series has indeed come to an end then the recent, sudden and abrupt termination of Hasbro's Clone Wars action figure line makes a whole lot more sense. When it was announced that the action figure line based on the series was being put to rest after the one and only wave of 2013 (an international exclusive that won't be sold at American retail) many collectors and fans wondered if Hasbro had learned something about the fate of the show that it wasn't allowed to tell anybody at the time.

Oh please, it's just moving to Disney XD. We already know they've been writing Season Six. And we know of three episodes they cut from airing that are in the can.

If true this is both a major FU to the fans and an awful start to the Disney Star Wars era.
The series is so detailed and takes its time... nothing like the breakneck pace of the films. I think I'd prefer The Clone Wars season 6 > Episode VII.
Also... The Clone Wars made up for the awkward pacing of the prequels and in many cases are superior to the prequels.
It will be difficult to accept the obvious upcoming press release. We could probably write it for them:

"WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS"
"WE ARE THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THAT STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS HAS BEEN CONCLUDED TO FOCUS ON THE UPCOMING STAR WARS FILMS."
"MAINTAINING THE QUALITY OF THESE UPCOMING FILMS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US. AGAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOYAL SUPPORT AND DON'T FORGET TO BUY STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS ON DVD AND BLUE RAY THIS CHRISTMAS."

    Etc, Ad fucking nauseam.

Interesting... this article nails the speculation that straight-to-download/BR offerings are more likely:

    "
We reached out to Lucasfilm for official comment, and all the studio would say is this:
“The Clone Wars will remain on Cartoon Network through its fifth season as planned. Additional episodes of the show are currently in pre-production.”
Sounds pretty cryptic and uninformative, right? Well, actually it’s quite revealing, especially with the emphasis on additional “episodes” having been greenlit, not “seasons.” As TheForce.Net contributor and all around Star Wars guru Eric Geller notes to Hollywood.com, “The conventional wisdom has been that The Clone Wars will end after its sixth season.”"
