What's up with Weller's character?

TDKR is still fresh in everyone's minds, therefore it created this trope as far as the General Audience is concerned.

 

Makes sense when you put it that way.

 

If we're going to do comparisons with Nolan's Batman movies, we should look for them not in TDKR but in TDK, which is the movie the writers have said they wanted to draw some inspiration from or something along those lines.
Was anything even known about TDKR when the script for STID was written? Star Trek finished filming May 2012 and Rises came out a few months later if I'm not mistaken.

 

There are many, many references to Buckaroo Banzai scattered throughout TNG. The oscillation overthruster prop makes several appearances. According to their dedication plaques a number of Starfleet vessels were assembled at various Yoyodyne shipyards and contractor facilities.

 

I am kind of sad that JJ and his crew need to draw inspiration from TDK.

Why?

ST09 was better than TDK (In my opinion). Besides, Rottentomatoes and Metacritic agree with me as ST 09 has a much higher critical reception than TDK.

I consider TDK to be overrated,Dont get me wrong it was a good film but it is not the best superhero film ever. Also, I was never into the Joker worship like the comic fan boys. Joker in TDK was too much of a gary stu for my taste, I hope STID is A better film.

 

Because Abrams and his posse are fans of TDK and this is their way of paying tribute.

 

Since Peter Weller doesn't seem to get many lead roles in big releases, I don't suspect he'll be around for the next movie after stId, unless the minor role continues.

 

He will get shot by a group of thugs and turned into a cyborg!

 

I'm getting the feeling that he may have a small role screen time wise, but it may be an important role plot-wise. So in that sense, his role may not be "minor", even if it is short.

I have nothing to back that up, of course. It's just a feeling.

Or go straight from performing neurosurgery to playing a rock gig at a club, while spouting off philosophical ideas.

 

He's Batman.
