Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

Whoever said Sylvester McCoy was akin to Jar-Jar in this film should be bitch-slapped in public place.
I found the movie absolutely stunning. I like how it was foreshadowing the events of the LOTR trilogy but it stayed on its own course, which was an adventure/treasure hunt.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

I was wondering if anyone knows definitively if the Trek 9 minute trailer is only in IMAX theaters or at all showings of the film? The only reason I'm seeing this film and not waiting for the DVD is because of the Trek trailer.

I'm sure soon enough the 9 minutes will be on the web. Why not save yourself money?

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

It'll only be w/the IMAX version, which is SOP for this sort of thing...

...I'm going tonight, undecided about 2d vs 48fps 3D, which my theater does offer. I think I'll see it in 2D first and then go for the other if it warrants a rewatch.

To be fair, IMAX 9 minute preview >>>>> crappy cam quality leaked 9 minute preview.

The non-IMAX have a trailer, but, not the "First 9 minutes of the movie" that IMAX has (And not all IMAX showings have the 9 minutes either)

Just back from seeing it, brilliant movie!
Only complaint is Glamdring still doesn't glow and neither does Orcrist.

How do you find out which theaters have the trailer and not? They aren't advertising - at least here in ATL - whether they do or not?

I guess I could call too.

There's a thread in Star Trek movies XI-XX, I believe a Trek Today story that has a link

I was more thinking at some point it will be officially put up on the web.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

Okay I'll admit the 48fps sometimes looked a bit jerky when people were moving around. Like the projector had currently forgotten how to time the frames. Otherwise it was pretty unoticeable to me.

Film was visually spectacular and enthralling, and it's nice to see a Middle-earth film put the dwarves front and center as the Erebor prelude did. It's not as good as any of the LOTR films, and it's choppily paced, and it often tries to sell moments as if it's LOTR in ways that don't work (this dwarven band is not exactly the Fellowship), and there is some padding in that Frodo's scene is very pointless, and the action sequences often don't have the same weight or feel kind of arbitrary like the whole 'entire dwarf company hangs on tree while Thorin fights' kind of way.

Serkis and Freeman acting off each other was the highlight of the movie.

All in all I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the sequel.

I doubt it. Did Batman ever do that with the first six mintues of their movies?

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

Go see this movie.... NOW!!!!!!

I just got back, and I absolutely loved the movie. The tone is both fresh and unique while simultaneously being vintage LotR/Peter Jackson fare, and it was a treat getting to see so many familiar faces in this earlier time frame. It's been so long since I read The Hobbit that I'd forgotten a lot of the specific beats of the story, even though I remembered many of the broader structural details, but found myself more than able to follow what was happening.

I loved the prologue with the fall of Erebor juxtaposed with the cameos from Ian Holm and Elijah Wood, and it served as a great introduction not only to the film, but also to Thorin and his storyline. One thing I did notice about the prologue and the cameos from Holm and Wood is that they had to so greatly de-age Holm that he looks a lot younger than he does at the beginning of Fellowship, which this film's framing device is meant to lead into. This isn't that big of a deal in the long run, but is noticeable enough that it does warrant mentioning.

The film has a lot more comedy than any of the LotR films, which I think is fitting given that this is meant to be a much different period in the history of Middle-Earth, one that doesn't yet have the clouds of war and darkness hanging over it.

All of the Dwarves get some focus, but the film does clearly belong to Thorin and Bilbo, both of whom drive the narrative along as we really start to feel for the both of them. There's a great buildup of subtle tension between the two characters throughout the film that is paid off perfectly during its final climactic moments.

The Riddles in the Dark sequence is one of the many highlights of the film, with Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis playing off of one another perfectly.

I was expecting the film to end on a cliffhanger with the Company stuck in the trees surrounded by Azhog and his Orcs, and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't.

It's really going to suck having to wait an entire year to see the next entry in the series, but it'll definitely be worth the wait.

BTW, I voted an A+ in the poll and would give the film a star rating of 5 out of 5.

Something went very very wrong here.

Interestingly enough, I've never been more enthusiastic about it. Especially after seeing Fellowship Extended again yesterday. It's been a while.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

C-, and a lot of that is for the Gollum scenes. As we came to the end of the fight in the Goblin kingdom, it struck me. I'm watching 'The Goonies go to Middle Earth'. Sadly, The Hobbit has no heart, childish humour, overblown action set pieces and takes nearly 3 hours to get almost nowhere. Very disappointed.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

I pay very little attention to critical scores. The film grossed 13 million in midnight showings, and that, coupled with the 81% audience score, tells me that this film is going to be a huge box-office success and hit with audiences, even if it fails with the critics.
