Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater?

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

J.J. Abrams's explanation to Aint It Cool News:

"If that's the thing that's going to keep you from seeing the movie, great! Enjoy your reruns!"

I wonder if Scotty will finally get the towel that he needed after the Enterprise rises from the water.

Also, I have this crazy theory that that scene will serve ad the Enterprise's grand entrance.

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

"Scotty, will that work?"
"Aye, sir - it will."
"But... "
"Captain... it'll work. I give you my word as an engineer."

Boom. Done.

That would be the best explanation! :bolian:

WOW Was that water scene in STXI great foreshadowing or what?!

Totally agree. I love that Abrams and company are constantly trying to do things with the Enterprise that is completely unexpected.

Built on Earth. Great! I was tired of seeing the usual spacedock starship porn. Hiding underwater. Why not? After all, the ship is built to withstand intersteller radiation and all sorts of space nastiness (yeah, that's an official term) so as not to kill the crew inside. It should be able to stand a little pressure from a few cubic feet of water.

Does there need to be an explanation? No. TREK got too hung up on explain everything with BS technobabble. Better just have a one liner on it and move one. What TREK doesn't need is more technobabble. Those days are long gone. We've moved on.

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

In Thirty Days they did explain that modifications had been done to the Delta Flyer so that it could operate underwater. And even then it wasn't perfect, since the Flyer sprung a leak in no time.
Yeah, and Data leaked white goo when an arrow pierced his chest once.

Besides, the writers on Voyager never really bothered with little things, like consistency, or plots making sense. :D

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

The Delta Flyer flew to the very core of a(n artificial) water world, so it had a lot more pressure and weight to deal with thn the Enterprise, which is hiding just below the surface in Into Darkness.

That too. And it was even stated that Delta had the ability to go much deeper than the natives' subs.

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

Reminds me of a scene from Futurama, when the Planet Express Ship is being pulled to the bottom of the ocean.

"How many atmospheres pressure can it take?"

"Well, it's a spaceship, so anything between zero and one."

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

While trying to plug a leak nuScotty will lose a fingertip.

It has to be the middle one. Canon demands no less.
Don't forget though, depending on whether we caught a glimpse of Doohan' real hand, or we were shown a close up of his hand-double's hand, "Canon" Scotty both had the finger and didn't have the finger.

...I suppose you could say in that respect (both having the finger and not having the finger) he was sort of "Schrödinger's Scotty".

EDIT TO ADD:
In all seriousness, considering that they tried to hide the fact Doohan was missing a finger by going to the extreme of using a hand-double for close ups, I think you could say that the intended canon was that Scotty had all of his digits.

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

Hi I have a quick question. I am really exited for star trek into darkness but one thing that bothers me is how ther enterprise can go underwater. I would be okay with it if they give a good explanation. So I was just wondering if anyone thinks that they will give an explanation in the new move. I dont even care if its some new type of sheild technology I just hope they explain it.

Yeesh, I completely forgot the NX-01 moving through a *liquid Phosphorus* ocean in the pilot. And at the pressure of the gas giants liquid layer too.

Agreed 100%. One of the things that annoyed me about TNG moving forward in Trek was the endless need to explain everything with technobabble.

Great Film/TV is about the story and the characters not why things work and how they work. In a recent conversation I was having about the TV show Revolution several people were complaining about the show that they failed to adequately explain why the electricity went out and why the pendants on the show made the electricity go back on.

Who cares. The story is good - and the actors who play the characters are for the most part good to very good. That's what counts.

Uhm, I think this may have gone too far. From what I've seen the last few days, this submerging thing isn't even that controversial.

Still, consider that image stolen. :)

A picture really does tell a thousand words. Awesome.

I just wanted to use the pic of Alice Eve screaming to cap off the collage, so you'll have to forgive a little hyperbole. ;)

Her expression does very much have a "Where will you be when diarrhea strikes?" expression to it.

I very much doubt it. NuTrek isn't big on explanations.

I thought the last film was laughably full of silliness until some of the good people on this site explained away my doubts...
