I had no idea it was getting another makeover. Was there a prior announcement?

Anyway, this image was posted on BBC America's Doctor Who website as part of their "The Snowmen" gallery:

I did say it was a glimpse. :p From the looks of it, I would say that what we are seeing in the image is the part directly above the console. Also, note the Gallifreyan symbols.

BBCA has have a separate article about the new control room here, for anyone who's interested. In the article is Matt Smith's reaction to the new set:

Whoa. I had no idea it was getting a makeover either.

I have to say I really like the look of that design.

Wow. I wish they'd kept it a secret. Can't wait! I wonder if there's a reason for the change or if he just decides it's time? We know he's changed it himself in the past.

I kinda agree. It would have been fun to have the new design just turn up unexpectedly.

Feeling hopeful about this one. I hope it ends up looking more "Time and Space Machine" and less "Explosion in an antique store".

9/10 console room- what happens when coral consumes a wreckage of junk

11th- an artist who makes an abstract art piece with copper and dumps some junk on top of it

    Only rumours, since March.

Its partly for practical reasons - the 'old' set was too akward to move to the new studio, it would have cost as much to dismantle and reassemble as build a new one.

Dunno about that, sets are supposed to be dismantle-able... they did it with the previous one at least once. I'm surprised they managed to keep this a secret, a console room change is almost like a new companion, really!

Still, in universe this Doctor has been around at least three hundred years now (assuming he's remembering it correctly) and is symbolizing this age with a new coat AND a new coat of paint, as it were. Too bad though, I quite liked the last one. Holding out hope that it may yet again be seen, in the rumoured TARDIS-centric episode...

Seeing both console rooms was the highlight of the Doctor Who Experience for me!

I am incredibly fond of both of them.

Looks to me like the Doctor has redesigned his console room to reflect his more somber, solitary life since the Ponds took their leap of faith.

It will be very interesting to see how this is played out, but I'm anticipating a version of #9's angst and guilt played through #11's filter.

I believe it's by Doctor Who concept artist Peter Mckinstry and can be seen on the BBC site. It was one of the possible concepts for the Tardis interior in season 5.

It seems like the majority of elements from that were actually used. I'm glad they didn't use the morgue colors and interrogation room lighting though.

Perhaps the TARDIS is reflecting the Doctor's mood & mindset.

Also, why are Vastra's hands white?

I hope the new console room's console has proper buttons, switches, and knobs for controls this time.

Unfortunately, the season 5-7 console room set wasn't made to be dismantled. They had welded it into the soundstage beams, probably for stability reasons. Oddly, I think it would have been easier to move the 9/10 console room (assuming they didn't finally strike it after "The Doctor's Wife").

One interesting possibility next year is that there could be a Hartnell console room standing set, thanks to the Gatiss drama about the creation of Doctor Who. Its construction would come out of that film's development, but it would be available for Doctor Who to use. :)

And it was purpose built in the soundstage that housed the Torchwood Hub.

It didn't occur to me at the time, but on hindsight the area seemed smaller than the hub looked on TV!

The leading theories are plot point and production error.
