why didnt the voyager crew have tng uniforms

Out-of-universe, the DS9 jumpsuits were the current Star Trek costume.

In-universe, commanding officers seem to have the authority to decide which uniforms the crew will wear. Janeway liked the jumpsuits, therefore the jumpsuits were the preferred uniform for all.

In DS9, when Sisko becomes temporary head of Starfleet Security on Earth, he wears the TNG-era uniform. It seems to be a more formal uniform, between the dress uniform and the "fatigues" of DS9. Would make sense for Picard to prefer a more formal uniform for his starship.

I much preferred the uniforms seen in some of the early concept art. Better versions of the Next Gen constumes.

Which only demonstrates that some starship captains preferred the TNG uniforms. It doesn't mean that the uniform is exclusive to starships.

IMO, the early DS9/VOY uniforms were meant to be work fatigues, but they could be worn for regular duty postings at the discretion of a commanding officer. So you'd see them worn on some ships and outposts, but not all of them. Starfleet might have ultimately decided that Starfleet personnel needed a more unified appearance at the time (after the Voyager's disappearance) and the First Contact uniforms may have been issued to once again give their personnel a cohesive look.

They had the early DS9 uniforms and stayed with them for the entire series.

Given they were lost on the other side of the galaxy they missed the memo requiring them to switch to the TNG movie/late DS9 uniforms.

As for the variation between the early DS9 and TNG uniforms, I always envisioned it being at the CO's discretion which duty uniform they wanted their crew wearing.

^ Which is pretty much exactly what happens in many real world navies (such as the US), isn't it? A ship's captain designates a "uniform of the day" which the crew wears.

TOS seemed to have concurrent uniforms in service, the "Cage" types were occasionally reused for personnel from other vessels. And its possible that there was unseen overlap with the TMP style too (particularly in light of Admiral Pike wearing a TMP style dress uniform at the end of the last movie, in alt-2258)

The Space Mountie red jackets seemed to cross over a little with the early TNG PJ's if one chooses to take inconsistant flashback costuming literally.

I know far too much about the outfits of fake astronauts in a pretend future :-/

I always liked the DS9/Voyager uniforms better than the TNG ones anyway. The latter seemed too gaudy. Too much color. Which is also why I preferred the ST:FC uniforms to *any* of the ones previously used. :)

Don't forget the in Generations we saw Troi and Worfwearing a TNG uniform when she crashed the ship, but Riker and Data were in the DS9 uniforms in the same scene. So it might've been more a transitory phase.

Generations was such a strange sight with those different uniforms. I've watched the film hundreds of times and it still bugs me! I work at a large supermarket, and when we had new uniforms we had signs up for a few weeks telling us of the date of change. I can understand one or two coming to work in the wrong uniform, because that's always going to happen. In GEN it just looked like they wore what they felt like that day.

Obviously it was Casual Friday.

It makes more sense if the early DS9/VOY uniforms were a variant rather than a replacement for the TNG uniforms.

starfleet had already made the transition to the new uniforms when Voyager put to space.... either that or Bob Blackman decided on a larger wardrobe....:guffaw:

once again this makes no sense when sisko went to earth he wore the tng uniform

No one was supposed to be smart enough to notice that.

I'm just wondering if it was an accident or a concious choice for Geordi to switch uniforms half way through he movie?
