Time Team is history

Bob The Skutter

Complete Arse Cleft
In Memoriam
After 20 years Channel 4 have decided to put the axe in to Time Team.
The show has been a favourite with viewers since its launch in 1994, with its combination of history and eccentric archaeologists, such as Phil Harding and Mick Aston, proving a surprise ratings winner.

During its 19 series and a number of specials, the team made several important discoveries, including the remains of the first Spitfire to be shot down during the Battle of Britain and a Bronze Age burial ground on the island of Barra.
However, Channel 4 has now decided to spend its history budget on a range of 'innovative' new programmes, including a series about Stonehenge and a documentary on the hunt for Richard III's body.
Presenter Robinson, who found fame as Baldrick in the BBC sitcom Blackadder, said he was proud of what the team had achieved.
'Not many performers are given the privilege of featuring in two iconic TV series - but I've been lucky,' he told the Guardian.

Ah well, they've had a good run. Sad to see it go, just the same.

As for the proposed series on Stonehenge....problematic. I do find Stonehenge docs interesting, but the same two conclusions tend to crop up. 1) "We really just don't know what it's for...." and 2) An elaborate explanation based on the pet theory of whoever's in charge of the dig based on nothing much at all.

A damn shame. Great show. It's about the closest any of us will get to time travel.

Hey, they've set some eps in the US. Maybe a US/Euro partnership where the team investigate sites across Europe and the US. That'd be cool. They've kind of done that with the series Coast.

Do you think i say 200 years time a new holobrain implant tv show called The Time Team will go around digging up the cast and crew of the present time team and dig up all the locations they visited and dug up....that would be cool. lol

I was just thinking the same thing recently while watching one the many Time Team marathons on Yesterday; they showed an episode where they revisited one of their first digs, and showed footage of how Tony Robinson et al looked back then. Watching that particular ep as old rerun itself had such a "meta" quality, that I couldn't help wondering watch future historians & archaelogists would make of Time Team itself.

On the cancellation, well, Time Team had a good run. The Roman site eps tend to be my favourites.

Oh, that's a shame. It wasn't a show I watched religiously, but some of the special editions in later years were fascinating. It was a nice little show, and they had a good innings.

"No one knows who they were or what they were doing..."
