“Celebrate 50 years of the world’s favourite Time Lord with this very special edition of Monopoly!,” says the press release. “Featuring all eleven doctors, the best-loved companions and of course, the monsters and baddies from across space and time, from the Brigadier and Captain Jack to Jo, Susan and Ace. Play with extra special Doctor Who tokens, including the Doctor’s scarf, designed just for this edition! It’s an adventure like no other as you revisit 50 years of this amazing show!”
While we know these special editions of Monopoly never fiddle with the corner squares, it’s a shame “In Jail” couldn’t be changed to the Stormcage Containment Facility. After all, River clearly has a “Get Out Of Jail Free” card.

Interesting choice of stories... sort of...

The board image in that link isn't the final design. SFX posted a correction with the final version, here.

Looks all right. I'm a bit disappointed that all the property spaces are story titles instead of locations, but the art in the center is pretty good.

Very very cool though I won't get it as my pre 1996 Doctor Who knowledge is limited so I would suck at it

^Have you NEVER played Monopoly? Knowledge of the episodes doesn't even enter into it. You land on spaces; you buy them. That's pretty all there is to it.

I, too, wish they had chosen locations rather than episodes. It seems a bit strange to be buying episodes as properties. But, I do like that they replaced the Railroads with different versions of the Tardis.

I have the 11th Doctor edition of Monopoly that Winning Moves released last year, and I wasn't going to pick this version up, but after seeing that board I may just have to. :)

Except for Six being a bit too small, I think I prefer the original board design.

And using episode titles for the properties is a puzzler. All I can figure is the designers couldn't remember the names of enough planets.

But, ah well. Still pretty cool.

I've been waiting for more details on this edition. I'm also a little disappointed that they just used story titles instead of actual planets, but the center piece looks great (although, honestly, I thought the earlier version seen in the original link looks better). I'll definitely pick this up since I don't have any of the previous versions.

Episode titles?

I think it's so it stays true to the notion of Monopoly "places" that have a linked theme (like three Dalek stories, three Cybermen stories, etc).

Finding linking planets or locations might prove harder.

(Yes, I just laid the challenge for you all :))

Yeah, but I don't think they linked the episodes very well. For example, you will notice that they used End of Time Part 2 and Omega as Boardwalk and Park Place. End of Time Part 1 is used somewhere else. Why not use End of Time Part 1 and 2 as Boardwalk and Park Place so that you have the complete episode when you own the pair? That would make more sense to me.

A few years ago, I sat down and laid what I thought was the best way to link link planets and locations (I also did a similar thing with chess). However, I've since lost that document (it's on a hard drive that I can't access at the moment) so I guess I'll have to sit down and do it all over again.

Reminds me of a James Bond Monopoly that came out a while back. The properties were just the Bond movies. That's it, kind of disappointing.

That board seems like a really lazy translation. I have to imagine there's a better way to pull that off. Just slapping some Who words and titles on the board seems weak.

Stories instead of planets? Maybe it's a subliminal advertising, compelling one to purchase more DW DVDs. ;)

Sincerely,

Bill

It is extremely hard, because you actually need to find eight group of thematically linked planets, and no matter how you do that, you'll end up with some very obscure references.

Oh, I tried anyway:

Earth by any other name:
Earth
Ravolox
Antykhon

Parallel Earths:
Pete's World
Inferno's World
Arthur's World

Space stations:
The Wheel in Space
Nerva Beacon
Satellite Five

E-Space planets:
Alzarius
Ballustra
Terradon

Human colonies:
Androzani
Messaline
Varos

Dark dimensions:
The Void
Limbo
Omega's Black Hole

Cybermen worlds:
Mondas
Telos

Dalek worlds:
Skaro
New Skaro

I can understand them going with Episode names rather than places, but, really, they should've at least made the effort to put End of Time Part I and II together in the same group, as previously mentioned.
