XXXth Olympiad - London

I dont want the Olympics to leave.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about it all being over too. It's a very end-of-school sort of feeling, that bittersweet feeling that accompanies a change of era but also a knowledge that the era was very successful & enjoyable.

I've loved watching these Games, from the opening ceremony to the end. After all the worries, carping & grousing, LOCOG pulled off an amazing feat of organisation and, even more importantly in the longer term, got the international branding aspect for Great Britain absolutely spot-on.

The closing ceremony was pretty much what you expect from closing ceremonies in that it was a bit longer and more haphazard than one would like (and compared to all opening ceremonies). Having said that, I have to admit enjoying the cheesy Spice Girls reunion, Eric Idle leading the stadium in a good old singalong, and The Who with a great performance at the end of the show. Baba O'Riley was a clever choice of track too, continuing the Inspire A Generation theme nicely, even after the flame goes out.

Rio have a tough act to follow. But London met the challenge of hosting the Olympics by not trying to ape the Chinese. London did things differently, most noticeably by having a great sense of humour & historical perspective about the Games. Rio shouldn't try to be British. Let it succeed at the challenge by bringing a uniquely Brazilian feel to its hosting.

In the meantime, while I never really get into the Paralympics, I suspect Olympics-withdrawal will get me watching some of it.

I can't wait to see the passing of the Olympic torch from London to Rio tonight. Going from one country to another has always been symbolic, highlighting the cultural shift and introducing a new set of Olympians in another four years the likes of Missy Franklin and Gabby Douglas.

That was a great Olympics. To Team USA, you did a fantastic job. Reguardless whether you won a medal or not, I am proud of all you. Congratulations to Team GB for doing extremely well again. And to everyone who competed, thank you for an awesome Olympics.

Was anyone else wondering if Boris was going to fly the Olympic flag too close to the flame? ;)

That was a great show, went on a bit mind you, I gave up when Darcy Bussell was dancing, judging by what people are saying it didn't go on too much longer. Personally I loved seeing the Spice Girls, and Russell Brand was actually not too annoying. I thought Idle was brilliant but it has to be said, only Freddie Mercury could own the night from beyond the grave!

Anyway as someone who wasn't that bothered before the Olympics started, I think it's been brilliant and I only wish I'd seen more of it, and that maybe I'd tried to get a ticket for an event!

Saturday night summed it up for me though, who knew diving could be so tense?

BTW, anyone know if the German diver wolfram is ok? (must resist the urge to always add an 'and hart' on the end of this name...)

Well I didn't watch any of it because we were out for a Ruby Murray but I'd just like to thank you all for a hilarious blow-by-blow account. Well done.

Nadzeya Ostapchuk stripped of her gold medal after failing a drugs test.

Presumably Valerie Adams will now take the gold medal.

Close call between the antipodean friends;

Australia - 7 golds
New Zealand - 6 golds

London did an exceptional job of hosting the games. All the naysayers who predicted we would struggle to put on a show were proven wrong. The games were brilliant, the mood in the capital was great, and Team GB were magnificent.
It's just a pity it all ended after only 2 weeks.

You have to feel sorry for the athelte who failed to make the final by one place. Who knws what they could have done in the final.

There were quite a lot beforehand, mainly in the media, and especially when the whole G4S security debacle happened.

Well G4S certainly did screw up, and should only get a percentage of the fee they charged equal to the level of service they provided.

They're trying a variety of methods to climb out of the hole they've dug themsevles in. Donating money to the armed forces is the latest one!
