XXXth Olympiad - London

Amusingly, they played a spot of Matrix music between the Taekwondo quarter and semi final bouts this afternoon...

The use of music in this Games has been uniformly excellent; witty, irreverant, occasionally cheekily self-referential. Exactly in keeping with mood set by the opening ceremony. I'm hoping the closing ceremony continues this very British, tongue-in-cheek approach to the Olympics.

Luke Campbell - Gold

Well done lad!
It was very close between him and Nevin during the fight, but that third round was great for Campbell. Great stuff. :bolian:

Yup, enjoyed that a fair bit, even if I prefer professional to amateur boxing generally.

And Usain. Wrapping up a relay world record with The Mobot.

Bolt's attitude is awesome.

Looking forward to the 4x100 now. I want to see a WR!

Fuck yeah. That's what I'm talking about. Immense! :techman:

Nice little screw up on the part of the officials though. Announce the end results and medalists and then take it back a few minutes later with one team being DQ'd.

I'm not arguing the disqualification as it was pretty obvious that our guy stepped on the line. But that was a pretty stupid screw up to post the results and then take them back. Let the team celebrate for a bit and then dash their hopes.

In the spirit of the British media bashing Vancouver's Olympics two years ago, I will now bash these ones. The London Olympics suck! :p

The end to that 10m dive competition was bloody awesome. One great dive after another. I didn't expect Daley to get a medal at all after his form so far, so his bronze is a really pleasant surprise. But the US and Chinese top two were just stunning; what a great competition! Wow!

The standard in that Men's 10m platform diving final was unbelievable!
Boudia and Qiu pulled off some amazing final dives, and Tom Daley fought really well to get the Bronze. An enthralling final round, all 3 deserve their medals. :bolian:

The top 3 were exceptional.

The difficulty of Tom's final dive was always going to make things tough, but to get a medal, wow!

Boudia's final dive was just phenomenal!

Yup, that final dive by Boudia, under that kind of insane pressure... brilliant!

The Chinese fellow was totally heartbroken not to win; the shock in his eyes! You could see he thought that somehow, he'd be able to win. The mismatch between his visualisation, and reality, was so traumatic for him.

Well, that's the Olympics over for me- Taekwondo, boxing and beach volleyball all finished, and I'm not interested in the running round in circles...

I watched the game online and we don't get that channel on this cable system. You were supposed to be able to watch every event live on NBCOlympics.com.

Hmmm, maybe I misinterpreted what they were saying. I thought you had to show proof of having the channel itself, like some kind of code they only announce on the channel. I didn't check into it after reading that.

I just out in my zip code and cable provider so they could tell me what the local on TV listings were. I've watched all sorts of events on the NBC website, even on specialty channels I don't get.

Also, USA women win the gold in basketball. Hopefully the men can follow suit tomorrow.

USA! USA! USA!

Our politics and healthcare and economy are a mess, but at least we've got something we can all agree about for two weeks.

This reminds me, I wanted to ask: what is the gesture Mo Farah was doing when he won both golds? (the one Bolt is repeating in this picture.)

The commentators here didn't know what to make of it.

Despite losing the gold to the American women, it was nice to see how happy the French women's basketball team was to win the silver. It's always fun when an unexpected teams excels and wins their first medal. They were clearly elated to just be on the podium. Congratulations to them for their success.

Shame the French women couldnt teach the french mens basketball something - did you see that nasty attack against the spanish player (he went straight for the Spanish crown jewels!).

But yeah, an amazing couple of days to be here in East London. I havent really left the flat/work but the atmosphere is electric and its going to be so sad to waive goodbye to the Olympics and the Paralympics in a few weeks time.

The success of TeamGB is amazing considering this country doesn't put nearly enough into sports. Of course the US will rank well in a medals table - they spend over 14 billion a year on embedding sports as a critical priority. Not in the UK. During the Olympics was on the government closed 20 leisure/sports centres. Whatever side political fence you lean on, that is pure :guffaw::confused: especially when the 2012 Olympics is critically about legacy.

In spite of the threats to sports up and down the country TeamGB has really triumphed. It would be great though if it started to receive the kinda money the US/China does.

I'm not really a big fan of the diving events, but I see Tom Daley got the bronze medal in the 10m platform final. Good for him! He's got this really charismatic and likeable personality.
