XXXth Olympiad - London

Uhoh, Brazil losing their gold medal match in football.

I've only seen the second half, but Mexico is simply the better team. "Give Neymar the ball and see if he can score" is not a viable tactic on this level.

He was in the 200m final. That means that right now he's one of the top 8 sprinters in the world. Which means he had a chance. Everyone in that race did.

He wasn't directly qualified for the 200m final and no, he didn't have a chance. To win a medal, he'd have to run faster than his personal best result. That's something difficult to do when you have to run more than one race in a day. Besides, because he wasn't directly qualified for the final, he had a bad lane, at this point, it's even a challenge anymore.

I'm getting fired up for the gold medal game in women's hoops later - I wonder if NBC will actually show it, or if basketball will continue to be relegated to some channel in the 900s or streamed online only.

It pissed me off that they put the women's gold medal soccer match on the "NBC Sports Channel," which is of course the only sports channel out of 900 sports channels (including ESPN 8 - The Ocho) that I don't have. They had sports running on NBC, CNBC, and MSNBC, but not that, because that's the one people especially wanted to watch so they want to force you to buy the extra cable package to see it. And you couldn't watch it streaming unless you had the channel either.

I watched the game online and we don't get that channel on this cable system. You were supposed to be able to watch every event live on NBCOlympics.com.

I don't get ESPN 8 but I do get ESPN 15 - The Tebow.

I am pretty surprised women's soccer and men's basketball, two sports that generate buzz here are buried in obscurity. Yet I feel so incredibly lucky I got to watch handball and ping pong in prime time.

You know, another thing about the Olympics, I really wish they would briefly explain the rules before an event starts. Some of them are obvious, run faster than the guy next to you. But for unfamiliar sports to a particular audience, a 30 second primer before the match wouldn't hurt.

I joked about handball above, but it seems like a pretty exciting, fast paced sport. I just have no clue what I am watching.

Hmmm, maybe I misinterpreted what they were saying. I thought you had to show proof of having the channel itself, like some kind of code they only announce on the channel. I didn't check into it after reading that.

Just watched the BMX from a couple days ago, great entertainment once again. It looks goofy, but it's extremely competitive with close competition, yet very noticable differences in the riders' strength and a good amount (but not too much) of chance adding to the unpredictability.

I was super happy Colombia got two medals, well deserved, especially the female winner. Also awesome to see Strombergs coming out of nowhere in the final. After watching all the qualifying and semifinal heats, I had him only as the fourth fastest at most. Connor, Willoughby, the Colombian who got third, one of the two Dutch (forgot who), plus the New Zealander who crashed out in the semis all seemed stronger to me, but the defending champion took it again. :)

While no one has any control over how some of these athletes react to victory or defeat (hello, McKayla) or perceive themselves, being cocky is just that--they're cocky. A friend of mine doesn't like Michael Phelps because she thinks he's cocky; others think the same of Ryan Lochte. Bottom line is, everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. And there's always the argument of ” Who cares what others think?”

Let's face it. Olympians are human beings and shouldn't be elevated to a godlike status for their achievements. I can admire them to a certain degree without overlooking their flaws.

Man the US Volleyball team is crumbling in this match. They don't deserve the gold with this performance. At least it's a silver I guess.

And now the Brazilians will now defend their 8 year reign as gold medal champions on home court. That might not be a good thing for Woman's Volleyball if you're not Brazilian.

I think they can only have one competitor in each weight class
I wish they'd be more consistent with this.

I suspect part of this is that there's a pretty hard limit on the total number of athletes the IOC want to be competing in any Olympics (something around 28k IIRC). So that has a knock-on effect on each nation's total permitted representation, and then I suppose each sport's federations have to decide between themselves and the IOC what the sport-by-sport breakdown is.

If you think about it, the amount of bureaucracy and organisation behind running an Olympics - before you even get to what the host country itself has to do - is terrifyingly immense.

Is it just me or do a lot of the Track athletes come across as arrogant assholes?

Personally, I really love all that stuff.

The posturing swagger of sprinters especially is just brilliant fun. It's part of the theatre/entertainment of the event to me. Plus, when they justify it by getting world records, frankly, I love it when they metaphorically stick two fingers up at those who doubted them.

Yeah, it's really good entertainment value. Lots of close racing, and not a little NASCAR style high drama due to the potential for something to go spectacularly wrong. Of course, god forbid any serious injuries, but a few injury-free high-speed crashes do add to the spectacle of the event. I heard that the BMX has the highest ratio of medical staff presence to athletes of any sport in the Olympics.

Looking forward to the 4x100 now. I want to see a WR!

And finally, before I end this post: Mo Farah is a legend. :techman:

Amusingly, they played a spot of Matrix music between the Taekwondo quarter and semi final bouts this afternoon...

You go up against Usain Bolt and you're going to lose. US gave a valiant effort though, but they really didn't have a chance.
