Ungrateful Actors

Plus I like Janeway. Then again, I like Kirk and Picard too. I like Sisko and Archer...but which is best? There's only one way to find out...

(every Brit on the BBS - This is your cue!)

Our only excuse is the clocks went forward at the weekend so our British o'clock is out of whack. And the answer is, of course

FIIIIIIGHT!

I thank you =]

A lot of Start Trek fans think it is blasphemy to criticize any of the shows, especially if you were paid to be on one. I have never understood this. It is a job for them, not a religion or a way of life for many fans. Some of those actors have even said, gasp!, that there is life after Trek and if they had been fired from the show they were on, they would be okay with that. Being on Star Trek usually fills the checking account, but it is not the Holy Grail of acting jobs fans think it is. Fans think that, because they are fans. It is what we do, get over-hyped and way too invested in a fictional TV show. Looks at us now, wasting time on a blog about a show that has not been on in years.

Who has not b^tched about their job at one time or another, no matter how much you get paid? Actors on any TV show, (yes, including the Holy Trek) can complain if they want. Whether anyone listens to them is another story.

Also, last time I looked, Robert Beltran grew up poor with 6 or 7 siblings, so I would not consider him "overprivileged". Wang always wanted his character to become more, and what actor on a successful show has not wanted that? People always want honesty and the truth until they hear what that truth is, and it does not conform to their beliefs.

I'm sure it has already been said but many of us know doubt complain about our Job from time to time.

It's been what a decade since VOY departed our screens?

But some of the comments that have been made are what some fans have been saying for many years.

You disagree with their opinion fine, we have free speech. But it doesn't mean what they are saying is wrong. Being on the inside can allow you to see things that being on the outside doesn't allow you to see.

If Beltran and Wang were dialing it, perhaps they were suffering from low morale. A lot of peoples work performance can drop if they have morale.

Yeah, morale is awful. I caught a bad bout of it last week and it really screwed me up.

Don't understand the hate being directed at Garrett and Robbie. They helped create the show that we love watching, and under duress too. Thank you gents

I think it's just that they keep talking about how much it sucked.. over and over and over, telling the same stories and it was years ago. So people respond to that. I don't hate either of them (Garrett was quite lovely when I saw him) but I do roll my eyes at hearing the whining for the umpteenth time.

I totally disagree with the OP. I admire Beltran and Wang for having the courage to speak out about what they thought was wrong instead of bowing and crawling for the people in charge, people who didn't do a good job.

If anyone should be criticized, it should be the so-called writers and producers who:

1. Managed to screw up what could have been the best Star Trek series ever.

2. Didn't realize or didn't care about the obvious potential of the characters and the actrors.

3. Treated certain actors and characters like s**t while favorizing others.

4. Came up with pathetic explanations for heir obvious mistakes and failures.

5. Deliberately insulted large groups of fans with certain storylines and events during the last seasons of the show (see "Fury" and "Endgame").

This idea of 'grateful' is a little confused.

These actors are undoubtedly grateful for being employed. Just like most artists and craftsmen.

This doesn't mean they ought to be silent when their work is being undermined by bad writing, directing, production or studio direction.

On the contrary, they ought to be vocal precisely because they care about their craft.

WTF?

I dont remember a character in either of those eps looking down the barrel and saying 'get a life you nerds. btw u r fat lol'

Laurence Olivier said it best "I belong to a profession of whores."

Are whores allowed to complain about their pimps with out getting cut?

With reservations regarding the 'could have been the best Trek series ever' (TNG and DS9 both had better premises and better casts) this post absoloutley nails it. Wang and (particularly) Beltran are not bad actors - there were worse actors than them in Voyager. The problems lay elsewhere...

"Fury" was a deliberate insult to the fans of the character Kes. There were fans sending in mails, wishing that Kes would be back as a regular character. And what's the reply from those in charge? They bring back the chaacter-only to destroy her in one of the worst episodes ever in TV.

"Endgame" wasn't only a bad episode storywise. It also contained C/7 which annoyed a large group of fans.

Sometimes actions can be more insulting than verbal comments.

Yeah, I'm with Nick on this one (despite the fact that he's a Collingwood supporter).

There's no evidence they 'deliberately' insulted anyone.

Some people think they're Star Trek.

Unhealthy people.

Also...

Some people think they're football.

But mostly those some people think that they're some of Football and go to war with the rest of football.

I have scientifically just proven that Star Trek is healthier than Football.

Look at it another way. Collingwood's humiliating loss to the piss and poo (can I say that here?) on the weekend wasn't a deliberate insult to loyal supporters who pay their membership fees and expect to win premierships every year. The players wanted to win as much as anyone ... things don't always go to plan.

The poor writers and producers gave Kes one last hurrah and got nothing but complaints and whinging for their troubles.

No wonder famous people hate their fans.

Jennifer Lien rejected the first Script for Fury, made some notes and they changed it, which (secretly) made her part of the problem and not some returning hard luck hero.

One last hurrah? Definitely not. They deliberately ruined and destroyed the character and p***ed in the faces of the fans at the same time.

Let me explain: There was a letter campaign going for having Kes re-instated as a main character. Those in charge had two options:

1. Please the fans and bring back the character for the rest of the series.

2. Ignore the fans and don't bring back the character at all.

They did choose option 3 which was: Destroy the character as much as possible, kill her off at the end (which was the original idea) and thus show the finger to the fans who dared disturb the "gods" with silly letters. I don't think they were so incredible stupid that they really believed that the fans of Kes would enjoy the episode.

Was there any other reason to bring back a character who they had done everything to erase from everybodys memory for one lousy episode with one only purpose, to ruin and destroy the character as much as possible.

As for Lien's involvment in the script, she didn't like the idea of killing off the character and made them change that. However, I think that she should have refused to take part in that episode. But I guess that if she had done that, they would have brought in a lookalike and killed off the character at the end, as they actually planned.

I think they ruined and destroyed the character deliberately to show the finger to the fans. If someone can prove that I'm wrong, please be my guest.

Teaming up Chakotay and Seven and by doing that, insult a large and loyal group of fans (The J/C-ers) was also a deliberate finger to a certain group of fans.

You want them to say "No comment" every time they get asked if they enjoyed being on set with insufficient lines to say?
