With the release of S1 imminent, there are two obvious choices:

1) continue use the existed consolidated thread.
2) use the existing thread for pre-release hype, but have a fresh consolidated discussion thread for each new season as and when it's released for reviews and further discussion. i.e. a similar model to how the SFF subforum manages new blockbuster movie post-release discussion.

My personal feeling is towards option 2, but it's your forum, so what do you think? Unless someone comes up with a blindingly good reason to override the majority decision, I'll go with the majority opinion when the poll closes in two days time.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

I always like fresh threads so I went with option 2. That way to there might be those who will participate in a new thread instead of coming into an already existing and 3000 reply thread that might come across as a little intimidating.

Whatever we do I'm a bit excited that this forum might end up being one of the top Trek forums on the board again because of this excitement. People will probably be rediscovering TNG and it will be fun talking about the show in a whole new light now.

The potential rise in activity has other implications too, more of which I'll mention another day as it doesn't impact this topic. Hey, I'm allowed to be cryptic. :D

But yeah, it will be interesting to see the TNG forum get lots of new discussion, and I also agree that a pre-existing 3k thread is pretty intimidating to new visitors to the forum.

Plus, once we're into the season by season release cycle, its schedule naturally lends itself to the SFF format of pre-release/hype consolidated thread and then a subsequent review/discussion consolidated thread.

Let's see what other folks think about this too, though.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

Yeah I imagine most of the future discussion of TNG is going to be centered around the blu-rays anyway, so might as well open it up beyond the one thread.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

The second one IMO. It would be easier for people like me who only come here every few days. With only 1 thread, it'd be difficult to find the start of each season's discussion.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

More than one thread.
Prerelease consolidated thread
Post release consilidated thread

Separate episode (HD) in parenthesis after the thread title.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

^Yes, this is what I was thinking as well. This option will, I think, prevent what could become a massive ball of confusion.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

Logic dictates that multiple threads will cause less confusion. Confusion leads to chaos, which is illogical.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

There will be a lot of reviews, better to start season threads instead of using the current one.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

Heck I think even a thread per season is going to be very hard to go through.

I mean what if I only what to talk about Code of Honor (I don't) and I might be one of only handful of people who want to hash over that episode, I don't think I am going to want to go through a whole season 1 thread just to get to the comments that impact that one singular episode.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

I thought making threads on specific episodes was allowed and encouraged. We have one thread per discussion this forum isn't going to be as busy as I'm hoping it gets.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

I think one thread per season release would be best.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

Option two for sure. One thread for all seasons would get way to confusing.

Yes to both aspects: obviously individual threads about single focused topics or narrative aspects of episodes are perfectly fine! We already have those for the standard definition content, and of course that's fine! :)

What a consolidated thread per season is about is:
1) preventing the otherwise predictable slew of multiple separate "I got the my BR set in the mail today and it's awesome!" threads that then need locking/merging (with the resulting loss of content/meaning that always results when multiple threads are merged at a later point in time).
2) keeping any season-wide HD discussion in one thread e.g. no point in having separate multiple threads about the conversion itself and how that affects the whole of the season. It's common sense, really, but a way preventing redundant threads prophylactially rather than having to cure them later with thread locking/merging of very similar content.

Hope that makes some sense, and is practical for the kind of discussion most people want?

A TNG-R subforum with anticipation and review threads for each season.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

^ I actually had that thought as well but in the end I think one general discussion thread for each season and then individual threads for any episode one wishes to discuss will work out just fine.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

I'll have to join the blue-line majority. Separate season threads are most logical.

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

I think the majority is now overwhelming enough to be confident of the outcome, though of course the poll doesn't actually close formally until a bit later on.

You will be unsurprised to know that I'm particularly glad that you're happy with the majority decision. ;)

Re: IMPORTANT POLL: how do you want to manage the S1 bluray discussion

Well, that was an overwhelming result.

Separate season threads it is.

I guess this means there's now a race to see who gets to be the first to post the "The OFFICIAL TNG Bluray S1 discussion thread". ;)

... closing this thread as a decision has been reached.
