What do you do for a living?

Mr Silver

Commodore
Newbie
Or perhaps you do one thing with the goal of eventually living off that and something else you are less passionate about to pay the bills?

I have an ulterior motive for starting this thread as I'm looking to poach career (maybe not specifics, but industry definitely) ideas from anyone and everything and for some reason I'm find that hard to do in the bread and butter world that I currently inhabit - nobody I know seems to do anything particularly exciting!

So what do you do?

I am a manager/bartender at a local microbrewery. It's basically the most fun I could ever imagine having at work.

I'm a researcher, editor, and general wearer-of-many-hats at a small, Manhattan based educational publishing company. I was a teacher and psychological researcher before that. I would like to go back to school someday, though, to complete a phd in neuroscience.

Indeed,

I also imagine it's pretty cheap to host your own parties and get togethers with the rather generous discount that bar workers seem to get, well over here in the UK it's ridiculous anyway!

It's actually illegal to get any kind of discount on alcohol in the state of Illinois. We're not even allowed to have Happy Hour. If we give a discount, it needs to be a special for the entire day, and it needs to be offered to everybody.

That said, sometimes I just get a lot of shit for free.

:wtf: That's shocking!

But I suppose the state of Illinois has a point, given that discounted alcohol is generally seen as a major factor in problem drinking (as we have experienced in Europe).

Yeah, and if you're going to have Happy Hour or something, people will take advantage of it and try to drink as much as possible in that window while drinks are cheap. By keeping things the same price all day, people are less inclined to binge.

I'm a drafter at a small electronics company. Well . . . I say a drafter, but I mean the drafter. As in, just me. Because, small company. :p
Basically I do just about all the documentation, everything short of designing circuits. I've done a fair amount of mechanical design on enclosures and test fixtures, and even graphic design here and there. I like it. I'm pretty good at it, and very thankful to have been brought back from being laid-off in 2010 :D

Though my dream job would be to work with my hands. I would seriously think about selling extraneous organs in order to have my own workshop with enough tools to make and sell things that I make.

You could actually pull something like this off, even in the current financial climate by avoiding costs such as having a physical premises and instead operating an online business.

I'm a Psychologist.

I'm the Clinical Director for a large non-profit that works with homeless veterans and their families.

Freelance Video Editor, Video Production and Computer Graphics.

Have you ever encountered job opportunities of a "adult" nature in your specific field. For some reason I can imagine the behind the scenes stuff (eg, designing computer graphic engines for websites, editing video, etc) in the adult industry as being incredibly lucrative.

One of my bar regulars is a video editor, and he has been known to dabble in porn from time to time.

I live in an apartment so I can't just get a shed or clear out the garage. And I highly doubt my neighbors or management would endorse the use of saws, drills and grinders in my living room

Oh, I also try to sell paintings and illustrations, so [shameless plug]feel free to visit the Etsy page linked in my signature![/shameless plug]

I'm a Project Engineer for a processing facility. Currently working as (Interium)Engineering Manager for the site. Trying to make that my perminate position, but time will tell. Currently have 4 Engineers and a Draftsman working for me. :)
