Urban outs the villain. Maybe.

    My theory:

*The nuTrek creators (except for Abrams) are avid Trek fans (most of the series)
*They enjoy putting in "Easter eggs" and other homages (Tribbles, Admiral Archer's prize beagle in the first film)
*Cumberbatch's villain is A) wearing a Starfleet uniform and B) can withstand being hit by Spock...HARD...as well the Vulcan nerve pinch.
*This movie's scale has been touted as being much more expansive than the previous movie.

So I take that info and interpret it to mean not Khan, not Gary Mitchell, but...

    ...Trelane 2.0.

He's wearing a Starfleet uniform because he's posing as a human being and wants to manipulate the crew of the Enterprise.

And Trelane wearing a Starfleet uniform would be a nice homage to Q's frequent donning of Starfleet uniforms.

I'm going with my theory until proven otherwise...

Well if true, I'd be delighted, as I was hoping for Mitchell all along (Orci's denial aside... What do we expect him to say?)

    ;)

That said, I'd be just as happy if Cucumberpatch was playing Garth of Izar or even an android (which would explain his strength).

It'll be interesting to see what kind of rebuttals Urban's comment generates in the days to come.

That fact that Urban let it slip, or that BC may be playing Mitchell?

So, if it does turn out to be Gary Mitchell, will they change it from passing the Galactic rim, to some other Intra-Galactic Anomaly? Which would have more people upset? Warp Drive fast enough to get them outside the Galaxy in such a short period of time (As in TOS), or making Warp Drive speed comparable to later Series and doing an anomaly within the Galaxy instead?

Such two-dimensional thinking... Do you believe the galaxy is spherical, or a flat spiral? In which direction is it stated that the Enterprise was traveling? Is the barrier only around the edge? Or the entire galaxy - above, below and around? Think about it.

Will the person(s) who says Abrams & Co have never outright lied to us please stand up and be counted for spitball practice?

Actually, I think this is a bit of Karl Urban sense of humor, intentionally choosing from among the exclusion list. "Oops, did I say that out loud? Oh, darn. I guess the Tribble is out of the bag now. <wink>"

That BC might be Gary Mitchell. I didn't think Mitchell was that popular to be brought back. If they were to bring back one of the old "classic" villains, I would want it to be Harry Mudd. And to be played by Jason Segel.

They could just go to Delta Vega again, wherever it is.

Indeed. This is a red herring.
Has everyone forgotten they were auditioning Hispanic actors before they settled on Benedict Cumberbatch - who comes across as a choice of casting against type.

I mean, does Benicio Del Toro strike anyone as the Gary Mitchell.

(Its been awhile since I posted here...)

I don't see how the revelation or non-revelation of the main villain a year before the release will influence the box office of a film. They won't be able to keep it a secret anyway. Nobody, not even the pre-pre-pre-previewers will go into this film not knowing who the villain is.

Actually, I would think that Benicio del Toro would make a pretty good Gary Mitchell. What do you think?

Better than someone who is supposed to be of Indian descent, in any case.

But since when has Khan been Hispanic? He was a Sikh from northern India.

It's neither of them. The character on paper can be played by anyone in any form. Only during the casting process did they found out what they were actually looking for. That's why they considered Del Toro, and then Cucumberbiatch.

I can see Del Toro as Mitchell more easily than I can see Cumberbund being Khan, but my gut tells me that Abrams & Co. have gone with the name recognition character, even Gary might make a more interesting character for the new story.

    Just my .02 worth.

While this is true, the current comic series set in the Abrams timeline is supervised by Bad Robot to make sure they don't do anything planned for the movies. It would be way too sloppy, even for Abrams and his Cohorts to allow Gary Mitchell to be in the very first issue if they were indeed going to use him in the movie.

Or perhaps Urban screwed up and Cumberbatch is actually playing Gary Seven?

Thanks, Wormhole. I saw a mention of that character on one of the pages I googled but I thought it would be someone more dramatic than that (ie, a villain.)
