Is that an early version of the script? I noticed a few differences aside from the bolded bits.

The Guinan scene is VERY different. I doubt they filmed two versions of that. I wouldn't want it replaced even if they did.

It's the draft they went into production with... but principle photography can last up to 8 days an episode, so there's plenty of time to request rewrites (e.g. the Guinan scene). Also, actors often change their lines somewhat to make it flow better.

That conflict of interest was dealt with in the episode -- it's not like it was ignored. Captain Louvois told Riker she would be specifically watching him to make sure he was giving his best effort. Plus, I thought Riker mounted a pretty good case for Data not being a sentient being, don't you? (or would you have handled the case differently?) Indeed, Maddox never objected to Riker being the prosecutor.

Also, it was just a routine hearing, not a full court-martial.

I´ve just read that. I really don´t see how that could amount to 20 aditional minutes. I can see 5 min...but no way 20.

Perhaps they intend to include flubbed scenes, production mistakes and other outtakes. As a fan, I might find that interesting, but not the general audience.

I was going to make a joke about them only ever filming 65 minutes of footage for the episode... But then I thought it would in fact be interesting to see all the alternate (or botched) takes for a selected episode as a special feature. These things really make you appreciate what goes into making film, the decisions creative and technical (much like deleted scenes do... if of course you're given the reason why they were cut.)

It is customary for any deleted scenes to be provided in the "extras" section, leaving the original episode intact. But if they can manage to also allow the option for interleaving them into the respective episodes, that would be nice. I would much rather it be an option, though.

Why do I think I've seen that scene as part of this episode? When I was a child I used to hire CIC(?) videos out of the local video shop and I could swear I've seen that scene as part of the episode. I always felt like there was something missing on my DVD's of Coming Of Age and this scene is it! Were some versions of this episode with this scene released, or have I just been making up an entire memory for the past twenty years?

I've seen still photos of the cut-scene of Wesley's birthday party and heard of other things that were cut. But after decades, how is this coming out now?

Well, they never went back to the original dailies / negs before now.

Way back in 2009 before TNG was mentioned that it was getting a remastered treatment other than an upconversion test I wrote:

For Paramount to Archive the original camera negative even though it was not a cut negative show would mean they would have had to archive all of it, or at least the circled takes. Perhaps the circled takes were then cut and assembled together for archiving. Highly doubtful.

So it sounds like the circled takes original camera negatives were archived. This is what makes Measure of a man extended cut possible in HD.


I'm not entirely sure but in episodic TV these days I think all of the footage is available for the editor not just the circled takes due to most TV episodics being shot digitally and not needing prints made for dailies or even dailies telecine transfer to videotape. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. So Enterprise season 4 would have loads of Sony HDCAM videotapes from the cameras with every take of every scene and possibilities if they ever wanted to extend an episode assuming CBS Television is archiving the actual HDCAM tapes and made backups on another digital format data storage such as AIT-3 or AIT-5 (AIT format since discontinued in 2010) or LTO-5 data tapes.

Any Trek TV show in the future will be archiving camera files (in 4k or 6k) as well as the mastered show in HD. You can bet they won't want to have to do another TOS-R/TNG-R on the next series of Trek TV in 25 years.
