So, is this villain thing official (spoilers here)?

I remember the first images for The Next Generation I saw were black and white stills in People Magazine.

The first-released publicity still was in colour, in TIME magazine. Here in Sydney, a few days later, we had a large science fiction media-themed masquerade ball - and I turned up in a quickly mocked-up Data costume, made from two turtle-necked tops, spliced together.

I'm still think the Khan thing is misdirection. My personal theory is he's playing Gary Michell. I think the Comic featuring Mitchell that the writers did was to throw everyone off the scent.

Um, maybe this is posted somewhere else and I'm just missing, but Simon Pegg, in an interview published Sunday but online today, says BC is definitely not playing Khan. I know he can bea jokester and play with the fans but he seemed pretty serious. Called his character a "thing"

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/9285164/How-Simon-Pegg-became-a-big-fish.html

Pegg is full of praise for Cumberbatch’s baddy, whom he describes
as “not just another disgruntled alien. It’s a really interesting… sort of… thing,” he squirms. “Obviously I can’t talk about it.” ....... “It’s not Khan,” replies Pegg, annoyed. “That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.”
Is that misinformation from the famously secretive Abrams camp? “No, I think people just want to have a scoop....[see article for rest]"

Yeah I saw that, and I'm kind of inclined to believe him. After spending an entire movie setting up a whole new timeline with a whole new cast, I just have a hard time believing JJ would really want to make the next movie.... a remake of Khan.

Even if the writers came up with a brilliant new take on the story, I would still think he would want to avoid something so obvious.

Especially since they don't really NEED a gimmick like this to draw people in. Judging by the response to the last movie, people are going to flock to this movie no matter what.

I doubt if he's Gary Mitchell either. I'm not sure why people are so convinced that he has to be playing some iconic character from the original series. Maybe he's just a brand-new character in the brand-new timeline?

It's because of JJ Abrams' well developed commercial instincts. I could see him going for a well-known name from TOS. That's the reason he rebooted TOS to begin with, rather than just invent all new 24th C characters. So why wouldn't he continue in the same vein?

But Gary Mitchell isn't well-known enough to matter. Really, it's Khan or just bring in someone new. If he's a Klingon, Romulan or Vulcan, that's high profile enough. (Vulcan, hmm...)

If he'd cast someone that was more physically right for the role, I could see a Khan story working okay. But Cumberbatch just isn't plausible as a character who is both Indian and (the bigger hurdle) supposed to be a specimen of freakish physical perfection.

The Conscience of the King" is playing in the back ground, was Kodos "the Executioner," ever mentioned? as a possible villain.
any how looks like it'll be Khan [Placeholder for hotlinked foreign image removed. - M']

Emotty.com took exception to you hotlinking one of their emoticons and put in its stead a placeholder image (which I've now removed.) Here's where I remind you that TrekBBS policy says that any inline images you post should be hosted on web space* belonging to you.

So BC isn't playing Khan. I think that's been pretty well established. I trust Simon Pegg implicitly. Do you recall in the '09 BR extras where they were thinking about having a final scene of the Botany Bay floating in space? Maybe they'll do that this time around and have Khan in the final leg of the trilogy.

Why does Cyrano Jones keep coming to mind? IDFK.

But like I always say, "Kiteo, his eyes closed".

Watching the TOS episode Assignment Earth right now, and I note Gary Seven is immune to the Vulcan nerve pinch - just like Benedict Cumberbatch's character in the upcoming movie...

Not that I actually believe he'll be playing anything other than a totally new character...

If it's not Khan, a lot of us on this board fell for the rumor hook, line, and sinker. (If it's Khan, then why the Stafleet sideburns on Cumberbatch? That STILL plays on me.)

Abrams is so secretive I can see him getting older and really eccentric. He'll film a movie and actors will be in it on a "need to know" basis. The recipe for Coca-Cola will be less secure than the plot of the movie. When it's done, they'll be no advertising or previews. He'll show it only to select invited audiences in a theater of his choosing, and everyone in attendence will have to sign a release saying they will undergo a memory erasure procedure to wipe the movie out of their minds before they leave the theater.

 I can actually see him getting like this as time goes by!

Guys, the movie is almost a year away. What's the rush?

I'm not sure when people got the idea that they needed to know everything about an upcoming movie months or years before the film even hits the theaters.

Nowadays it seems like people expect spoilers and a teaser trailer almost as soon as a movie is green-lighted. Whereas in my day we had to walk a hundred miles through the snow just to see a couple color photos in Starlog a few months before some new scifi movie opened.

Believe it or not, I had no idea what Raiders of the Lost Ark was about before I saw it for the first time. Talk about an exciting discovery!

It's the damned internet, Greg. It's redefined that Lennon song for us all.

I think the "free" bit just means that you can download the image without having to join a club or pay membership fees. I know of one place that's got some nice free smilies, but the really good ones are reserved for subscribers.

That's the best bet. :techman:

You know what would be funny? If one of the goals of the villain was to bring Khan out of deep freeze, but we never see Khan because the Enterprise blows up the sleeper ship.
