Mad Men, Season 5. General Discussion Thread (spoilers welcome)

After seeing this summary of the greatest moments of the season, I've realized that I'm very glad I decided to jump back in with this show. The only problem I ever really had was with Betty, whose odiousness exceeds my tolerance limits. :rommie:

I've gotten tired of Mad Men winning Emmys every year, but I have to admit, if it ever a season deserved it, this one does. Sorry, Breaking Bad. :(
 
Bert will probably move into Lane's office. If he dies in the office too, of old age, they'll think the office is cursed!

It just occurred to me that SCD hasn't discovered that thanks to Lane, they're $50,000 in debt. That has to come up in the season finale with an episode title like "The Phantom".

Technically, they just extended their line of credit by $50,000. That doesn't necessarily mean they're $50,000 in debt.

Maybe. However, IIRC, Lane extended the line of credit and then told the partners that he'd "discovered" $50k of profit that justified giving bonuses, in the hopes of getting one for himself to pay the back taxes/fines/penalities. If, in fact, the bonuses were given out using that line of credit the firm is, in fact, $50k further in debt.
 
They only used Lane's intended portion of it, so it shouldn't be much of an issue, especially as they've landed Jaguar.

Presactly. I may be wrong but I think most, if not all, of that $50k was used to give the staff their bonuses.

I think you're wrong. They decided not to give the partners bonuses in order to use most of the money for possible re-investment. The original proposed distribution (assuming bonuses of at least $8,000 per partner) would have left $10,000 or less to be distributed among the rest of the employees. My guess is that they ended up spending a maximum of $18,000 of the extended line of credit, and Don said he would cover $8,000.
 
Watched the episode again today. I really liked Don in this episode. He was true to his character in that he expected Lane to "man up" and take it. When Don told him he'd had to start over several times and that "this is the always the worst part", it really resonated -- unfortunately, probably not with Lane.

One of the reasons I watched the episode again was because I wanted to see the scene where Lane prepared the note. Wanted to make sure that there wasn't a second one created by Lane. He really loved his wife. Seemed cruel to not leave her a note at least letting her know it wasn't her fault.

I agree with whoever posted that killing himself in the Jag would have been a horrible thing for his wife to deal with. Seems like the writers just wanted to pile on another little irony by having him attempt to use the car fail because the car wouldn't start.

The make-up job they did on Lane's body was truly grotesque.

Sally is really starting to see her mother for who she really is. When Betty finally hugged Sally it looked like Valdemort when he "hugged" Malfoy in Deathly Hallows 2.

Don letting the kid drive I thought was a great moment for his character. He has shown himself to be quite self centered in the past. Now here he was doing something totally out of character just so that "someone" would get what they wanted that day.

Damn, Megan has nice legs. Love those little mini's she wears.
 
I loved Don's pitch to the Dow guys...

And Roger's line when they are leaving the meeting, "I'll buy you a drink, if you wipe the blood off your mouth." :lol:
 
My plan, if all goes well, is to start watching at 10:30 on the DVR so I can skip the commercials and be done about 11:15 pm. At this point, my best guess is that the show ends with Pete a full partner and Don sitting alone while Megan rehearses her play in Boston.
 
You guys are so lucky. I have to wait until tomorrow when it's available on Amazon because I don't have AMC.

All season we've been seeing Don trying to be a better guy. Sure, he stumbles, but he's trying. I just knew that in the end he'd try to help Megan.

Yeah, it's gonna be a killer waiting a whole year to see what he does. It was also cool closing out the episode with a James Bond theme song (1967's You Only Live Twice).

Pete is just a little shit. He never knows when to keep his mouth shut.

I'm glad we're still seeing Peggy. She's an important character and I think there's a genuine bond between her and Don. I'm pretty sure we'll keep seeing her.

This is like the third or fourth Bond reference this season, isn't it? And the irony of the theme title, You Only Live Twice. It's Don's second marriage, he's trying to do the right thing, it was the second time he drove someone to suicide... His comment to Peggy about never thinking her success would have been without him.
 
Yeah, I think Don was hurt by Peggy leaving, but I don't think he harbours any resentment toward her. He just didn't see it coming.
