It Appears I Was Wrong About Star Trek

I sometimes wonder if I do, in fact, like Star Trek. I mean, I've been a fan since TOS was in prime time. I watched TMP 14 times opening week. (In my defense, I was working as a projectionist at the time!) I sat in my living room with five of my closest friends and their spouses to watch the original airing of Encounter at Farpoint. Which we all actually despised, for the record. I struggled through movies that ranged from decent to ridiculous. I struggled through TNG which ranged from patently awesome to patently insulting. I LOVED DS9, though circumstances forced me to miss the first season. Voyager lost me about episode 9. Enterprise lasted four before I gave up....

I own 'em all on VHS, DVD or BluRay. I watch 'em from time to time.

I guess I enjoy them; I mean, I keep coming back. My kids laugh every time as I try and explain why I'm watching something for the umpteenth hundred time that wasn't really all that good to begin with.

Maybe it's just programming? I've conned myself into being a Star Trek fan? But every time I see the words Star Trek on a new book or DVD I get this little rush of adrenaline. And I'm waiting for the new movie with bated breath, having both loved and hated the first JJ offering.

Being a geek can be so bloody confusing!

Don't listen to anyone that bashes any of the Star Trek series. They are all likable, depending upon your personal preferences and interests. If any of them were absolute rubbish, the sub forums for them would be devoid of activity. They're all active, to varying degrees depending upon the mood and serendipitous blend of active members at any given time.

I actually find that I've got favorite episodes in each of the series, and definitely some that I'd refuse to watch again in each of them as well. While some Star Trek series have more enjoyable episodes than others for me, I realize that this varies for other people. I refuse to mock anybody for having one particular series as their favorite when it's my least watched. Star Trek for all... and to all, a good night.

I don't know if it's just the fact that I like a story universe that has a lot of stuff in it, but I've liked every ST series I have watched. (I haven't seen ENT yet).

Yeah, there are good things about all five of them, despite the fact that My personal preference is for TOS, TNG and DS9.

The only series I am not much of a fan of is DS9. TOS I enjoy the most with TNG following close behind. I enjoy VOY a lot. Enterprise had its good moments toward the end.

Was the animated series really that good that it's worth giving a serious look into?

Well the animation is rubbish but the ratio of good to bad stories is probably the same as any of the other shows IMO.
A lot of people don't like the Filmation style, but it wasn't that bad. In fact, with the time and budget limitations, the animation was pretty darn good.

I have enjoyed all variations of Trek to some degree or another. TOS is my absolute favorite, but have found something to like and dislike about all the rest of them. I like to listen to TAS with my eyes closed as I prefer imagining what is going on with the dialogue. And lastly, I keep my fill of Trek up, Thank God, to all the Trek lit that is out there.

I agree whole heartily, Although TOS AND TNG are tied in my book and I don't hate any of the rest.

It seems I'm part of a minority of people who love all of the series! Though the TNG era series are my favourite, mainly because I love the design ethics as well as the stories.

You are a wise man, Gary. Really, this is the right attitude to take, IMO. Anything else and one of two things happens. You either become so fixated on a select show or subgroup of shows that you begin to actually expend energy "hating" the others - hating a TV show! how silly and pointless is that! if you don't like it, don't watch it! Or you suddenly discover that your beloved show or shows has - gasp! - flaws! Oh, noooooo! And then you burn out.

They all (the best and the worst, and no, in this thread I'm not going to tell you my opinions on that - and besides, I'm kind of inconsistent because it depends on my mood) have good attributes and bad ones, high points and low points. Accept that, enjoy the good, reject the bad, and - most important - have fun!

During TAS initial run, I first became a fan of Star Trek. The animation, FOR ITS TIME, was actually average to above average. It is only by TODAY's standards that TAS is lacking. For a 30 minute show, they managed to have some very good episodes by very good writers. :vulcan:

I agree with your assessment of the ST series. :techman:

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! Only the series and episodes I like are any good... yours are crap. No real reason other than because I say so!:guffaw:
