True or False: Dear Dr. is most morally bankrupt trek episode evar

Huh?

It's just a poorly thought out moral quandary ala Insurrection. Plus this conversation is incomplete with Homeward and Tuvix being left out.

I hate the dumbass moral decision made in that episode. Everything else about it was quite good though. Kind of like ANIS--I hate Archer being an idiot in that episode but the rest of it is lovely. Yes I said ANIS was lovely.

Personally would prefer to think that after receiving Archer's report, Starfleet leadership would (maybe years later) send a expedition to rectify Archer's error in judgement. The dominate race wasn't going to die out right away. There was a good deal of time to save them.

Most
morally bankrupt, maybe not, but in the top ten episodes certainly.

:)

This. Phlox should burn, and Archer right there with him. Not for being an idiot and listening to Phlox's lunacy, but for being an ever bigger idiot for not taking it to the Starfleet brass.

The decision of that MAGNITUDE should have been made by Earth's government, not it's flagship's illiterate CO.

Great way to start a thoughtful discussion. But since everybody is chiming in, I'll share my two cents.

Dear Doctor is one of the episodes that made the biggest impression on me.

So what if you would have made an other decision? This was an episode that took the time to play out someone's moral dilemma instead of being just shoot-and-fun.

One of the best things about ENT is that these characters weren't know-it-all goodie-two-shoes like Picard and co.

I like to start with a bang from now and then.

Except that it wasn't supposed to be the Captain's dilemma in the first place. A Captian should know better than to play God.

*But Kirk did it*
Sure, Kirk did it. but... He had a full century of Starfleet history to learn from, whilst Archer did not. And his inexperience is a petty excuse.

As I said, the responsible course of action would be to report to his superiors. This was not a decision for one man to make. This was a complex matter, with complex implications.

Plus, let's not forget one simple fact. Phlox was wrong.

Dear Doctor Phlox,

EVOLUTION DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY! GOODNIGHT!
That is all.

^ Thanks! I thought about adding a Street Fighter-esque "K.O." to it, but I think it's awesome enough as it is. :D

And you, of course, have the superior morality. and possess absolute knowledge of how the future is supposed to be to make a decision about who is worth saving and who should die off.

The Prime Directive is more about hubris then anything at all.

:borg:

Then the episode should have been about the crew making a mistake and creating an unsolvable problem for the Valakians. That would have given Archer and crew a real reason to adopt a Prime Directive-like protocol in the future.

Sometimes the problems can't be solved in 5 minutes with a warm fuzzy feeling of satisfaction with a job well done.

Could you be more specific? It's been awhile since I've watched the episode and I don't recall anybody being happy about letting a species die off due to defects in their DNA.
