My Seventh Doctor viewing thread. Thoughts and opinions.

I enjoyed "Paradise Towers." Not as much as "Time and The Raini" though. It had a few clever ideas, and the concept of a 300 floor tower that housed people was intriguing. I wish they had explored that concept a bit more.

Since we're talking about 7, has anyone else every theorized that he is the longest lived incarnation (aside from 1)?

I mean, the 11th Doctor went for 200 hundred years without physically aging a day. When the 7th Doctor regenerated he was noticeably older looking than the last time we saw him. How many years must must pass for a Time Lord to actually look older?

Was the First Doctor 400-ish years old? 700-ish years old? Either way that's how long it took to give him the appearance as an older man. The 7th doctor must have been around for quite awhile then.

Of course you'd have to assume (as many do) that the Doctor lies about or does not know his exact age (so the whole "900 years old" thing would be just him making up a number).

Well, we never saw The First Doctor young, so for all we know, he was always old looking. Or Perhaps first Generations age normally, and it's not until your first regeneration that your looks age slowly?

Though, the first Doctor definitely did appear to Regenerate simply because his body wore out, whereas the Second was force Regenerated, and most of the rest of the Doctors Regenerated due to dying. So, yea, if the first Regeneration starts out as a baby or relatively young looking, and the body ages at the same rate as the rest of the Regenerations, then, definitely one has to believe The First Doctor was very much older than any of his future generations so far, since he wore the First body until it simply wore out.

:vulcan:

Maybe... but, you know... Occam's Razor.
Can't be sure what you mean by that, since we have absolutely nothing onscreen showing Timelords aging that far from youth every Regeneration, and we have mostly progressively younger and younger looking "births" of each of the Doctor's Regenerations, which would seem to indicate the Doctor is a bit like Merlin, gets younger with each Regeneration.

Well there's some truth in that, though on many occasions the next actor in line has been noticibly older than his predecessor (classic example being Baker after Davison, but McCoy was older than Baker as well, and even though he and Baker were probably about the same age, McCoy looks older as well). I think the graph will skew upwards again with 12. Whether the next Doctor is black or white, male or female, I'd be amazed if they were younger than Smith was when he got the role.

We have accounts of the Doctor being a young child - "such a lonely little boy", "When I was a little boy, we used to live in a house that was perched halfway up the top of a mountain", the 8-year-old Doctor being brought before the Untempered Schism and being one of the ones who ran away (and we know from the flashback to the Master's initiation that 8-year-old Time Lords look like 8-year-old humans). All the evidence points to the Doctor ageing like a human, albeit at a much slower rate, before his first regeneration at around 450 (according to The Tomb of the Cybermen).

The Doctor seems to be regenerating at a faster rate than most Time Lords due to his dangerous lifestyle, while others such as Borusa and Azmael were seen to be fairly old, physically, at the point of regeneration.

Watched Dragonfire yesterday. It was not as good as I remembered it being. Too man random things happening that pass for a story.

why the fuck did the doctor climb over the railings to dangle to his death, why did the villain turn his prison ship into a giant branch of Iceland and Mels exit was bizarre. Still it has Ace in it so I can forgive it all its flaws.

Good lord, frazer was 22 when he started as Jamie?
You've seen The Two Doctors, right? ;)

I didn't understand all that Sophie looks like a boy bullshit.

As an 11 year old, I was intoxicated by her loveliness.

At the time I still had the hots for Nicola Bryant, but I never thought of Sophie Aldred as a boy. I remember there was some chatter about her being a lesbian (because of course any female who acts manly is automatically gay  ) but that went away after she was shown coming on to that Russian soldier in Fenric, which ranks as one of the sexiest moments the series had seen since Zoe took a ride on the TARDIS console merry-go-round! ;)

Alex
I think that the Fenric scene was probably the show's first acknowledgement of sexuality, other than by implication. 16 or 17 years later, Rose made reference to breast implants and thereby made it canonical that women had boobies.

I received 'Paradise Towers' in the mail the other day. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet but I think I'll take a look at it tomorrow. Should post my thoughts around then too :)
I can't look. ;)

I haven't seen this thing since it first aired, but IIRC Dragonfire was one of the least impressive serials of the McCoy era. I think that pretty much the only thing I liked about it was Seven's statement about how ridiculous Ace's theory about how she got there was. That dangling cliffhanger was a test of faith, a way of distinguishing hardcore Whovians from people who could be accused of having lives and self-respect - or it was a way of jettisonning fans, something that the show seemed to be making a special push towards at about that time. :)

The early McCoy stuff seemed like it was designed to shed viewers
So they had an excuse to cancel the series.

Think I'll watch Curse of Fenric this afternoon.

I have just watched the Fenric special edition, so much better than the earlier McCoy material.

Also Ace is wearing stockings and suspenders, yes I am an old letch.

I adore the seventh Doctor. Very interesting time in the series' run. Everything post-Dragonfire is good to one extent or another (although I haven't yet seen The Happiness Patrol but really want to). McCoy brought something to the role that hadn't been there since Hartnell and he did it better than Hartnell as he wasn't ill at the time.
