DWM 447 Cover (SPOILER if you've been on Mars for a few months)

I don't really mind the new designs much but they'd seem much more formidable if they moved faster and had other deadly weapons that extended from the chassis. We've only seen them once so they could still be saved if they're handled better in their next appearance.

...if they...had other deadly weapons that extended from the chassis.

Actually, that's why the New Paradigms have the "hunched" backs. Viewed from the rear, there is a louvered section with a groove extending upward to meet another wrapping horizontally around the midsection.

Though not yet depicted on screen, the idea is that the louvered panel conceals a repository for other manipulators and weapons. When the need arises, the existing device dislodges from its pivot and rides along the track until it reaches the panel and stores itself. A replacement device emerges from the "bin" and slides along the track until it "seats" itself within the pivot, ready for use.

Whether or not the production opts to showcase this intended feature remains to be seen.

Sincerely,

Bill

Oh, and speaking of proportions, here's a digital comaprison similar in nature to the photographic example up-thread.

The far left version is based upon the second Dalek serial "The dalek Invasion of Earth". I chose that version instead of the "Dead Planet" debut design because the elevated, thick "bumper" would make for a closer comparison. Otherwise, the rest of the body is the "classic" design, right down to the double band encircling the mid-section.

The midlle example is the "New Paradigm" Dalek from "Victory of the Daleks". Besides the odd "hunchback", the "skirt" section is far taller and the mid-section considerably thinner (vertically). Though not shown in this "profile" render", that mid-section is considerably wider than the "skirt". In the "classic" design, the mid-section is more or less in line with the skirtand tapering into the grilled "collar" (or "neck").

The far right example is an attempt by the original modeler, Sam Therapy, to maintain the "earmarks" of the "New Paradigm" design, but bring the overall symmetry in sync with the "classic" design used through the run of the original series (and more or less recreated in the RTD "bronze" Daleks).

Sincerely,

Bill

Devolution of the Daleks (sadly not my own joke):

If the RTD-era Daleks were designed to be Piper's height, it's quite a coincidence that it happens to be pretty much the same height as the previous models.

JLC is smaller than Karen; that's why we're getting the smaller Daleks back. :)

Short term companions? Billie Piper was with the show for two seasons, and Karen Gillan for two and a half. That's longer than most nuWho companions.

I think the reason for why the Daleks were built for Billie Piper's height was to help her performance in the episode Dalek, while the New Paradigm were simply built for Gillan's height because she was the companion and the RTDaleks were designed for the current companion.

Companions are short-term compared to the Doctors, the series, and the Daleks. Building Daleks based on the height of the companion who will be gone in a couple of years is a bit silly.

Of course, you're forgetting a couple of things.

No, I didn't forget anything, but thanks anyway.

Mr Awe

Thanks, Cutter. But just to clarify, Sam Therapy deserves the real thanks. He modeled each of these digital props from the polygon up. I merely arranged his meshes and rendered a final image.

Sincerely,

Bill
